Job Summary

The Survey Research Center (SRC) at the Institute for Social Research (ISR) is an international leader in interdisciplinary social science research involving the collection and analysis of data, especially data from scientific sample surveys.  SRC conducts some of the most widely cited and influential studies in the world.

The Data Science for Dynamic Intervention Decision Making Center (d3c), a program within SRC, is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Managing Director to oversee the development, execution, and management of our digital adaptive intervention projects. The candidate will be responsible for coordinating content development and ensuring the integrity of data collection and analysis. Additionally, they will provide support to users and clients, respond to research information requests, participate in outreach activities, manage data agreements, and oversee grant writing and dissemination efforts. Key operational duties will include team management, regulatory compliance, budget oversight, and strategic planning. The ideal candidate will hold a Master's Degree in a relevant field (Doctoral degree preferred), have at least eight years of managerial experience, and possess a deep understanding of human subject regulations and data sharing policies. Exceptional communication, problem-solving skills, and a commitment to a diverse and inclusive workplace are essential. Familiarity with NIH grant mechanisms and experience in managing a large research center will be advantageous. d3c is an interdisciplinary collective of data scientists developing the methods scientists need to design adaptive interventions that improve outcomes for everyone. The successful candidate for this position will manage operations for the center, whose research portfolio includes multiple sources with an annual budget of more than $3.5 million from federal and institutional sources. This position requires working actively with faculty investigators, center staff, trainees and students.

Responsibilities*

Digital Intervention Design (20%)

Conduct literature reviews related to digital adaptive interventionsLead, coordinate, and conduct procedures for content developmentOversee research to develop digital interventionsMonitor integrity of data collection and use of protocols and proceduresSupervise the analysis of data and summarize the results

 

User and Client Support (25%)

Participate in responding to requests from sponsors/researchers for information pertaining to research projects and resources for developing digital adaptive interventions, provide consultation as appropriateParticipate in instructional and outreach activities aimed at training researchers in the use of d3c resourcesComplete data use agreement applications. Manage the process of sending/receiving data from internal and external collaborators

Dissemination (25%)

Grant writing: As directed by investigators, assist with writing and editing grant applications, particularly human subjects and data management sectionsAuthors or co-authors reports for funding agencies, articles for publication and other research materials May travel to meet with colleagues, investigators, or sponsors to provide project informationPresent research findings at professional meetings and conferences Use technical and project knowledge to provide advice to faculty investigators on data security and confidentiality mattersPrepare summary data/reports for d3c newsletter, presentations, and in response to requests by sponsor, journalists and/or outside usersCompile research results and author/co-author papers for publication in reports, journals, books, and other media

Operational (30%)

Day-to-day responsibility for the management of d3c staff and operations including:

leading a team of  administrative and technical staff, including hiring, onboarding and training, supervision, and providing professional growth opportunities. Responsibility for space assignment and space usageregulatory responsibilities: work with investigators to complete regulatory paperwork (e.g., IRB applications) ensuring that the center is in compliance with all applicable policies (e.g., university, sponsor, local/state/Federal, etc.)budget oversight (impact, cost control) controlling costsdevelopment and maintenance of administrative processesstrategic planning: work with d3c leadership to help plan and execute the d3c's strategic plandata management: manage access to center databases/files and ensure that all personnel have required training (e.g., responsible conduct of research, human subjects, etc.)Required Qualifications*Master's Degree in a relevant field of study (e.g., social science, behavioral science, data or information science, organizational science, public health, statistics, business administration, etc.)Eight or more years of progressively responsible experience in the field of study in university, non-profit, or similar public or private sector research and member organizationsDocumented success in managing and supporting fast-paced, collaborative, technical and interdisciplinary teamsUnderstanding of human subjects protections regulations and experience completing IRB applicationsUnderstanding of data sharing policies and procedures and experience completing data use agreement applicationsExceptional attention to detail and organizational skillsOutstanding problem-solving skills and resourcefulnessExcellent written and verbal communication skillsEagerness to learn new skills and take on new responsibilitiesAn aptitude for fostering positive relationships, and a commitment to sustaining and supporting a diverse and inclusive workplaceDesired Qualifications*Doctoral degree in a relevant field of study (e.g., social science, behavioral science, data or information science, organizational science, public health, statistics, business administration, etc.)Behavioral science and intervention background, especially in digital interventions and mobile healthEight or more years of progressively responsible managerial experience in university, non-profit, or similar public or private sector research and member organizationsStatistical, computational, and/or methodological background, with an interest in causal inference and/or experimental designsDemonstrated experience with successful design, implementation and/or management of member or customer development and support initiatives in public or private sector settingsGrant writing/editing experience       Knowledge of university policies, procedures and systemsKnowledge of statistical software and tools such as R, SAS, or MPlus is desirableExperience using e-research regulatory and proposal management systemsFamiliarity with NIH grant mechanisms, policies and proceduresPrevious project management experience and familiarity with project management toolsPrevious experience managing a large research centerWork Locations

You'll work on-site at the University of Michigan, Institute of Social Research, Survey Research Center in Ann Arbor.  We offer flexibility for hybrid work within our overall Center guidelines.
