Purpose:
Stewards Individual Placements (Stewards), a program of Conservation Legacy, provides individuals with AmeriCorps service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants serve with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits to provide institutional capacity, develop community relationships, and support ecosystem health. Stewards in partnership with the Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park will host a Curatorial Assistant.
The Curatorial Assistant is an AmeriCorps position that will support the ongoing preservation of important historic artifacts and documents in order to improve the accessibility of these resources to the public for research and education.
Description of Duties:
Perform minor conservation tasks on collection objects such as freezing, vacuuming, dusting, and storing in archival materials Participate in routine conservation care include integrated pest management, taking light meter readings, and housekeeping in a museum setting Catalog accessioned objects Research, identify, and prepare objects for presentation to the Collection Advisory Committee Research current list of known missing records and documentation within the collection (addressing nearly 400 objects with ambiguous provenience) Assist Museum Techs in processing accessioned archives Conduct research requests
Qualifications:
Be friendly, willing to learn, and patient. Be detail-oriented and have an acute sense of awareness. Ability to perform delicate work very carefully. Area of study should be a related field such as museum studies, library science, or history. Must possess a valid state's driver's license. Be able to follow National Park Service guidelines for museum management and preservation. Ability to work closely with a team and independently. Applicants must pass a criminal background check which requires fingerprinting by an a DOI approved location prior to start date Must be 18 or older Must be a US Citizen and able to pass background checks.United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alienHas received a high school diploma or equivalency certificate; or has not dropped out of secondary school to enroll as an AmeriCorps participant and agrees to obtain a high school diploma or its equivalent prior to using the education award.Agrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete National Service Criminal History Checks for Conservation Legacy and the host site.
Additional Position and Community Information
Park housing will be provided if needed. Participant has the potential to gain a special hiring advantage with federal agencies through the Public Lands Corps Hiring Authority. Participant will be provided with park orientation and necessary training to complete the various museum management tasks of their position. Participant will be trained on relevant safety guidelines and museum-specific Job Safety Analyses. Surrounding community is rural with limited shopping and dining options. Having a personal vehicle is preferred.

Physical Requirements:

Time Requirements:
This position is expected to serve full time (40 hours) each week, but exact service schedules may vary.Lunch breaks will not be counted towards AmeriCorps service.Member may be required to participate in national, state, or local service projects or events as part of their service term.
Orientation and Training:
Member will receive an orientation that includes training on AmeriCorps prohibited and unallowable activities.Virtual and on-site trainings will be provided to orient selectee to museum spaces and general museum handling requirements.
Evaluation and Reporting:
As an AmeriCorps member, performance will be evaluated on whether the member has completed the required number of hours, the member has satisfactorily completed assignments, and if the member has met other performance criteria that were clearly communicated at the beginning of the term of service.
Reporting requirements include, but are not limited to, bi-weekly timesheets and accomplishment tracking.
