**Job Title: Material Handler**
**Job Description**
We are seeking a dedicated and hardworking Material Handler to join our team. Candidates will begin with a month of training, focusing on general clean-up, learning color codes for steel, and understanding warehouse placement. Training on the crane will be based on previous crane experience. This role requires the ability to walk 8-10 hour shifts, covering approximately 8 miles a day, both indoors and outdoors. Candidates must be comfortable with exposure to various weather conditions and operating indoor and outdoor cranes. Responsibilities include housekeeping, pulling beams, loading flatbed trailers and railcars, rigging, receiving inventory, moving materials via overhead crane, and completing shipping reports and bills of lading.
**Responsibilities**
+ Train for a month on general clean-up, color coding for steel, and crane operation.
+ Walk 8-10 hour shifts, covering roughly 8 miles a day, both indoors and outdoors.
+ Operate indoor and outdoor cranes and perform housekeeping duties.
+ Pull beams, load flatbed trailers and railcars, and perform rigging tasks.
+ Receive inventory, move materials to loaders using overhead cranes, and fill out shipping reports and bills of lading.
+ Adhere to all safety rules, including staying visible to other associates and avoiding walking between stacks.
+ Potentially train to operate saws, brake operators, and forklifts as promotional opportunities.
+ Learn and retain information based on color-coded inventory systems.
**Essential Skills**
+ Heavy industrial or construction experience required.
+ Ability to read a tape measure, verified by test or reference.
+ Ability to lift up to 50lbs, though most lifting is done by crane.
+ Experience operating heavy equipment safely and effectively.
+ Experience with overhead cranes in a heavy industry or military setting.
+ Ability to see and memorize color codes for inventory systems.
**Additional Skills & Qualifications**
+ 1-2 years of experience in construction or manufacturing.
+ Experience with forklifts, bobcats, band saws, and sheet metal operations.
+ Ability to work in a physically demanding environment, including reaching, stooping, and squatting.

**Work Environment**
The work environment includes both indoor and outdoor settings, with steel stored in a large building and two separate yards. Conditions can be very hot in the summer and extremely cold in the winter. The role requires wearing a hard hat, steel-toed boots, and a safety vest, providing a construction-like atmosphere. All current openings are on the second shift, with a 2:30 PM arrival time for a 2:45 PM safety meeting.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Petersburg, Virginia.
