Cost Engineer

Job Summary

The Cost Engineer is responsible for cost estimation for new business and existing parts, driving cost reduction initiatives, and collaborating with cross functional teams to enhance profitability. Proficiency in cost software and a strong understanding of automotive materials, commodities and manufacturing processes are essential for this role.

Responsibility

 

Develop accurate cost estimates for new business opportunities and existing parts, considering materials, manufacturing processes and supply chain factors. Collaborate with cross functional teams to identify and implement cost reduction strategies, such as material optimization, process improvements, and supplier negotiations. Evaluate supplier proposals to ensure cost competitiveness and alignment with project requirements. Partner with suppliers to analyze cost structures and negotiate pricing. Provide detailed reports on cost performance, including variances and cost trends and present findings to internal stakeholders. Develop and maintain cost models for various commodities. Analyze cost drivers and identify opportunities for cost reduction. Perform benchmarking against industry standards to ensure competitive pricing. Provide cost insights during the design phase to influence material selection and manufacturing processes. Conduct value analysis and value engineering (VA/VE) to identify cost saving opportunities.  Develop and maintain new cost database and ensure data accuracy for use in decision making.  

 

Academic/Educational Requirements

 

Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. 3+ years of experience in cost estimation, cost engineering or a similar role within the automotive manufacturing industry across multiple commodities.  

 

Required Skills/Experience

 

Exceptional analytical, problem-solving and project management skills. Proficiency in cost modeling tools, ERP systems and MS Office Suite. Experience with Siemens cost software an asset. Ability to collaborate effectively across departments and with external global suppliers. Familiarity with automotive component manufacturing processes such as forging, casting, machining and assembly. Knowledge of materials and supply chain dynamics in the automotive industry. Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications and CAD models. Excellent communication and negotiation abilities. Knowledge of lean manufacturing principles and cost reduction methodologies. Functional knowledge of accounting and financial principles.
