We are seeking a high caliber attorney to join our Legal Department, to handle a broad range of IP-related legal issues, including patents, trademarks, licensing, and source code, as well as managing and maintaining Jack Henry’s intellectual property portfolio. As Corporate Counsel at Jack Henry, you’ll be part of a growing and diverse team of smart and energetic attorneys, paralegals, and support staff. You will collaborate with colleagues from all over the company, partnering in initiatives that influence all aspects of the business. As an integrated part of the team, you will be the primary subject matter expert able to help to move the business forward in areas including, but not limited to: 

implementing an enterprise strategy to protect, create, and manage IP assets,advise on trademark, branding, and marketing matters and oversee IP applicationsproviding IP-related guidance through the life cycle of product development, 

 

The ideal candidate is an intellectual property attorney with a background in both in-house and private practice. Experience in financial services, technology and/or computer software industries is a plus. The candidate will be primarily responsible for managing Jack Henry’s intellectual property portfolio, developing processes and programs to create and protect intellectual property. This attorney will interact with the legal, business, and development teams.

This is a hybrid position that requires you to come to the office approximately once per month for onsite meetings, events, and training. The remainder of the time you may work remotely from home. This position can be based to work out of the following locations: Lenexa, KS; Springfield/Monett, MO; Allen, TX; and Cedar Falls, IA. Compensation for this position will depend on candidate experience and geographic location.

 

What you’ll be responsible for: 

Developing and implementing an enterprise strategy, procedures, and programs to mature and maintain the company’s IP portfolio, protect the company’s interests, and minimize legal risks with an emphasis on enforcement and protection.Overseeing matters related to trademarks, branding, and marketing legal issues.Analyzing trademark search results and provide clearance for use of proposed trademarks and product names.Managing and overseeing the prosecution of patent, trademark, and copyright applications.Assisting legal team in contract review and analysis regarding IP issues in technology transactions, agreements, and in-bound and out-bound licenses.Collaborating with company development team and engineers to consider patentability of company products.Providing advice, education, and training to internal teams on IP related matters, including open-source software issues.Assisting in IP litigation, including working with internal legal counsel and outside counsel.Staying updated on change in laws and regulations that may impact the company and advise management accordingly.

What you’ll need to have:

Juris Doctorate degree required and admitted to, and in good standing with, a state bar.A minimum of 5 years of legal work in intellectual property.Experience with the technology industry or technology products.Sound judgment, interpersonal skills, ability to work independently and as part of a team, and excellent time management.Must be able to travel up to 5% to other Jack Henry office locations for meetings, training, or to attend a professional conference.

What would be nice for you to have:

Experience serving as in-house counsel.Experience with financial software products or working within the financial industry.Experience coordinating with outside counsel on patent applications and defense.Experience with corporate intellectual property programs and functions, including drafting policies, procedures, and strategies.Enjoy building client relationships and working closely with various teams, such as operations, engineering, finance, and sales, at all levels.Self-starter who is curious and enjoys providing practical legal solutions in a fast-paced environment for a variety of matters.Ability to see beyond the question asked to the larger issue and future implications.
