ResponsibilitiesPerform quality control of VDOT roadway and bridge construction for field soils, concrete, asphalt, and aggregate testing of contractors' work to ensure contract compliance for routine activities of non-complexity, under the direction of a Construction Quality Control Inspector or Manager.Upon successful demonstration of required skills and aptitude, candidates will be eligible for more positions.Perform materials testing such as nuclear gauge soil and aggregate density.Review placement of and perform materials tests on concrete deliveries in accordance with VDOT and ACI standards. Make cylinders for delivery to the labs.Verify construction of roadway and highway materials and placement to be in compliance with drawings, VDOT specifications and standards, special provisions, and contract documents.With appropriate training and oversight, monitor and observe limited contractual fieldwork, which includes excavations, storm drain piping installation, drainage facilities, concrete placement, soil and aggregate placement, road surfaces, and pile driving while under supervision of a more experienced inspector.Advise inspector supervisors and contractor supervisors/foremen of non-conforming field tests.Take field measurements of materials placed/tested and record daily production and test results.Complete daily reports with attached VDOT materials testing forms.Receive materials delivery tickets for compliance and submission to contractor.Take assignments and direction from Quality Control Lead Management and Inspectors.Accurately record and report daily forms per project requirements.Review all work for completeness and accuracy prior to submitting.Submit accurate time sheets, mileage, and expense reports on time each week.Review jobsite safety daily and take immediate action to document and ensure OSHA Safety Standards and corporate policies are followed at all times.Maintain all required certifications and participate in training courses as required.Understand all applicable industry standards for the project and perform all tasks per standards and client requirements.Inspect and monitor contractual fieldwork, which includes excavations, drainage facilities, concrete placement, steel and precast member erections, soil and aggregate placement, road surfaces, and structures of moderate complexity.Review and inspect asphalt and concrete roadways and bridge decks.Review and inspect reinforcing steel and forms prior to concrete placement of more complex and non-routine structures and sign pour cards.Review lines, grades, dimensions, and elevations using standard survey and field engineering equipment.Oversee and enforce the installation of erosion/siltation controls, highway work zones, and traffic control devices.Prepare daily diaries, inspection checklists, and materials testing forms.Track deficiencies and nonconformance and their corrective actions; documenting daily work activity prep meetings and actively participate in kickoff meetings for work activities.Essential SkillsExperience in transportation, soils testing, construction, aggregate testing, asphalt, DOT, construction inspection, roadway construction, OSHA, ACI certification, concrete testing, concrete inspection, soil sampling, bridge construction, and environmental fieldwork.Active ACI Certification, Soils and Aggregate or Concrete, or Erosion and Sediment preferred0-2+ years of experience within construction with a degree in Civil Engineering or Engineering Technology with construction experience - or - 3+ years of experience in lieu of degreeAbility to work night shifts and weekends when needed (with prior notice).Ability to fill out reports accurately and timely.Additional Skills & QualificationsCertifications:Asphalt Field Level 1, Asphalt Field Level 2Asphalt Plant Level 1, Asphalt Plant Level 2Soils and AggregatesVDOT ConcreteACI Concrete Field TestingWACEL Concrete Level INICET Construction Materials testing.About Actalent
