Job Description:

ICF is seeking both local and international candidates to serve as long-term and short-term Senior Technical Experts for an upcoming USAID/Malawi-funded activity focused on addressing threats to the biodiversity and natural resources of Lake Malawi that are important to the economic resilience and food security of Malawians, as well as global conservation efforts. This 5-year activity will aim to strengthen economic, regulatory, and social governance mechanisms that effectively conserve the exceptional biodiversity of Lake Malawi and deliver sustainable, profitable, and equitable wild-caught and farm-raised fisheries in and around priority areas of the Lake.

Technical Expertise We Are Seeking:

Strategies, policies, and practices to:reduce threats to Lake Malawi’s biodiversity.increase adoption and promotion of sustainable fishing practices at all scales.develop long-term alternative livelihood pathways that reduce dependence on natural resource extraction and increase food security and economic resilience.promote gender equity and environmental justice in biodiversity conservation and natural resource management and governance.Linkages between freshwater biodiversity, fisheries management, and climate risk, and associated adaptation pathways.Assessing, developing, and implementing local, regional, and national natural resource governance policies, including experience with political economic analyses.Demonstrated excellence in writing and presentation ability in English.

What we need you to have (minimum qualifications):

Advanced degree in relevant field (e.g., biodiversity conservation, environmental/natural resource management, international development/relations, environmental economics, public administration)5+ years of relevant technical experience working to support conservation initiatives in Africa, and ideally with extensive experience in Malawi and/or Southern Africa.

What we would like you to have:

1+ year of experience supporting a donor-funded project team.Fluency in English. Knowledge of Chichewa and other local languages and dialects would be an added strength.Demonstrated excellence in writing and presentation ability, as well as experience successfully contributing to an intercultural team.Excellent analytical skills with a strong understanding of one or more of the following technical areas:Biodiversity conservation, must include experience with human dimensions, social and behavior change, or other human management or social science.Gender and social inclusion coordination and facilitation in biodiversity conservation and natural resource management contexts, and in developing countries.Alternative livelihood development (especially ecotourism) to reduce pressure on natural resources and promote food security and economic growth.Natural resource governance at the local, regional, and/or national levels, preferably in Africa or other developing contexts.Freshwater fisheries and/or aquaculture science and management in resource-limited developing contexts.Fisheries or other extracted natural resource supply chain management for economic development.
