Community Outreach Specialist - Bilingual Spanish Required- Houston, TX

The role of the Community Outreach Specialist is to implement strategies in support of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) goals, including: conduct outreach to enable LLS to serve more individuals affected by blood cancer in underserved communities, with a particular focus on Black/African American and Hispanic/Latino communities; build community awareness of and trust in LLS as a source of information and support; develop local and regional collaborations with both healthcare professionals and community leaders to further these aims. 

While employees may be permitted to work remotely, travel to the assigned office, HUB or Satellite Offices may be required as determined by the employee’s manager and the employee’s People Organization Generalist.

Responsibilities

Partner with regional Patient & Community Outreach (PCO) team to identify and implement outreach strategies in underserved communities to address health disparities. Conduct local and regional culturally tailored outreach and awareness events within underserved communities. Identify, establish, and steward relationships with community-based organizations and healthcare delivery institutions and maintain existing partnerships in the community. Conduct culturally tailored education about LLS and blood cancer, including in-person and virtual programs, as well as media interactions. Build and manage a diverse volunteer team to better reach health care providers, patients, and community members. Capture and report on data regarding outreach effectiveness and key metrics to monitor progress. Maintain excellent knowledge of LLS resources and services and working knowledge of blood cancer.

Education and Experience  

Bachelor’s Degree (Public Administration, Public Health, Social Work, Political Science, Sociology, or related field) or equivalent community health work experience.  Minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience in community organizing, community health outreach, policy campaigns, and/or health education and promotion experience preferred. 

Position Requirements 

Fluency in Spanish and English required. Effective verbal and interpersonal skills to facilitate effective communication with community members and community groups. Experience in building and scaling relationships with diverse communities, including those that focus on serving racial and ethnic communities, particularly Black/African American and/or Hispanic communities. Experience and skills in volunteer stewardship and educational programming. Strong written, oral, and computer skills to facilitate effective communication. Self-starter with high level of initiative and strong work ethic; demonstrated ability to work independently with some direction. Access to reliable transportation and ability to transport outreach materials up to 30 pounds. Position may require 50% or more local and regional travel; night and weekend work will be required at times.
