DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS Incumbents to this position recruit school dropouts, potential dropouts, out-of-school youth and adults, incarcerated youth and students identified as homeless or English Language Learners by visiting homes, community centers, shelters and places where individuals congregate, to encourage school attendance. S/he acts as a link between students, parents/guardians, the community, businesses and the school district. Supervision is received from a higher-ranking official and no supervisory responsibility is exercised. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES + Works directly with Spanish-speaking individuals; + Recruits school drop-outs, potential drop-outs and students identified as homeless, in collaboration with school attendance personnel, to encourage class attendance and school attendance; + assists school personnel in identifying students who are experiencing homelessness; + assists in the enrollment and obtaining of records necessary for school registration; + · Recruits out-of school youth and adults to encourage participation in the programs offered by the Adult Education Division such as Career Development, Literacy Life Skills, etc.; + Plans motivational and developmental programs for students and provides resource information for program participants including students, parents/guardians, teachers and the community and school personnel; + · Participates in orientation programs and intake of students by obtaining student information; + Assists students and works one-on-one to improve personal skills and class attendance; + monitors students progress and class attendance; + assists in coordinating parent/guardian meetings and conferences; + meets with parents/guardians to inform them of program goals and progress of students; + Serves as liaison between home, community and program administrators; + Provides resources and support for schools, departments and parents/guardians to serve student needs; + Communicates verbally and in writing with parents/guardians in both English and Spanish who have concerns or needs for their child, to determine what office or department will provide assistance; + Provides resources and support for parents/guardians who request new student placement; + Communicates in both English and Spanish or meets with school personnel and parents/guardians to inform them of the status of their requests or concerns; + Works with various education and community organizations and familiarizes students with programs offered; + distributes information and literature i.e. catalogs, flyers, etc. to inform clients of various school programs; + may be required to translate information and literature, i.e. catalogs, flyers, etc to Spanish + addresses residents, community groups and businesses for the purpose of promoting Board of Education programs and encouraging participation; + Prepares follow-up reports and maintains student records; + Performs related duties as required. FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS + Working knowledge of recruitment techniques and child accounting procedures; + Understanding and interpreting written material; + Ability to understand Federal, State and local Education laws; + Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; + Ability to translate and speak the Spanish language fluently; + Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions in both Spanish and English; + Clerical aptitude; + Ability to work closely with students, parents/guardians, residents, community groups/organizations and school personnel; + Courtesy; tact; sensitivity; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS + Associate’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Social Work or a closely related field, applicants must have the ability to fluently speak and translate the Spanish Language , both orally and in writing OR + Graduation from High School, GED or Equivalency Diploma and at least one year of full-time experience in school related activities or community activities involving students, , applicants must have the ability to fluently speak and translate the Spanish Language, both orally and in writing; NOTE: Verifiable part-time/volunteer experience will be pro-rated to meet full-time experience requirements. (Proof of education must be presented at time of appointment.) NOTE: Applicants must pass the written examination and fluently speak and translate the English and Spanish language, both orally and in writing.
