The Cost Engineer seeks the optimum balance between cost, quality and time requirements with manufacturing/process engineering knowledge, cost estimating, cost control, cost forecasting, investment appraisal and risk analysis throughout product and design life cycle.
The objective of cost engineering is to arrive at accurate cost estimates and highlight cost drivers that unnecessarily increase cost. Cost Engineers help design engineers create designs for manufacturing feasibility and help suppliers select reliable and statistically capable manufacturing processes. The Cost Engineering discipline encompasses a wide range of cost-related aspects of engineering and cost management: cost estimating, cost analysis/cost assessment, design-to-cost, and risk assessment of product features that increase cost and time to market Production Part Approval Process (PPAP). Cost engineering is a cross functional discipline of business management, finance, design engineering, supply chain management and manufacturing engineering. Cost Engineers go well beyond cost estimates, and advise on tooling design, base material selection, purchase component selection, supplier selection and optimal manufacturing process.
Cost Engineers are dedicated to furthering the concepts of Total Cost Management (TCM). Total Cost Management is the effective application of professional and technical expertise to drive product designs towards, best cost, profitability and minimize time risk to product launch and PPAP completion. In other words, it is a systematic approach to managing cost throughout the life cycle of any product design, project, product or service. This is accomplished through the application of cost engineering and cost management principles, best practices and the latest technology in the selection of optimal manufacturing process.
