Job SummaryThe Pediatric Trauma Clinical Information Analysts (PTCIA) primary role is to serve as an integral member of the pediatric trauma team working to improve care for injured children through data acquisition and evaluation. They are responsible for collecting, analyzing, and reporting data elements for the Pediatric Trauma Quality Improvement Program (PTQIP), National Trauma Data Bank and C. S. Mott Childrens Hospital Pediatric Trauma Program registry eligible cases as required for continued Level I Pediatric Trauma Verification by the American College of Surgeons (ACS). The PTCIA will work collaboratively with the trauma medical director, trauma program manager and trauma team to monitor the programs Quality Improvement activities.

Responsibilities*Identifies cases appropriate for inclusion in the trauma database by reviewing all patients presenting for treatment in the emergency department, as well as direct admissions to the pediatric intensive care unit.Accesses appropriate sources (Epic, EMS run sheets, referring hospital chart, medical examiners report, etc.) for obtaining all pertinent demographic, pre-hospital, clinical/surgical, financial, and quality improvement data to be entered into the trauma database. Assigns Injury E-codes, diagnosis and procedure ICD-9 codes; applies AIS coding to calculate ISS. Enters charge for all Class I and Class II pediatric trauma activations.Verifies and validates data independently and/or in collaboration with program manager, medical director, and colleagues as needed, to ensure correctness and completeness of registry data; to identify and trend quality issues; and to re-evaluate audit filters.Develops ad hoc reports for research, injury prevention activities, benchmarking, and trending. Analyzes and interprets data for requestor as needed. Prepares standard reports for committee presentation on a routine basis.Prepares data for submission to MDCH, National Peds TQIP, and NTDB on a regularly scheduled basis, by mapping data elements, resolving technical issues, and resolving data submission discrepancies.Maintains collegial relationships with UMHS MCIT, software vendor, MDCH, NTDB, and TQIP to ensure continued functionality of the trauma database.Stays abreast of annual changes to NTDB data dictionary and takes necessary steps to incorporate defined changes into the pediatric trauma registry.Maintains supporting documentation for the pediatric trauma registry including the data dictionary, process instructions, and logs of data submission to the MDCH, Peds TQIP, and the NTDB.Attends regularly scheduled Pediatric Trauma Audit, Monthly Pediatric Trauma M&M, Child Abuse Review Committee, and periodic meetings of the State Trauma Registrars.Participates in educational conferences, as well as the monthly webinar for Pediatric TQIP, to maintain knowledgebase in the industry, as well as to support requirements to maintain registry certification.Required Qualifications*Bachelors degree in a recognized filed which is directly related to the duties of the position 3-5 years experience working with all aspects of a trauma registry.Understanding of relational databases.Working knowledge of anatomy & physiology, medical terminology, ICD-10 injury, diagnoses, and procedures coding.AAAM training and experience in applying AIS coding.Experience navigating, interpreting, and abstracting data from the EMR. Strong analytical, problem-solving, critical thinking, and organizational skills.Ability to research and resolve complex coding and data issues.Understanding of statistical measures typically associated with trauma data management, including probability, z-stat, standard deviation, etc.Ability to integrate spreadsheet, word processing, and presentation software in order to fully manage all aspects of the trauma data.Ability to communicate effectively with a wide variety of intra- and inter-facility personnel using both oral and written communication.Ability to work mostly independent but to recognize opportunities for collaboration with experts of various disciplines.Ability to guard the confidential nature of the data associated with the trauma registry through understanding of HIPAA regulations.CSTR preferred.Desired Qualifications*Prior experience with Michigan Medicines Pediatric Surgery teams.Experience with documentation in an EMR (Epic efficiency highly preferred)Knowledge of university policies and procedures as well as university systems.Experience in academic setting managing and prioritizing multiple different projects.Modes of WorkPositions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department.
