The department of Surgery has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Clinical Dietitian position. The incumbent provides nutrition services and medical nutrition therapy to patients in order to further their medical and personal goals. This position also provides leadership and oversight to less experienced staff and acts as a resource of knowledge regarding patient nutrition.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS                                                                                           

Confers with physicians  and  other  healthcare  professionals  to  coordinate  medical  and  nutritional  needs  of patients.

Assesses the nutritional needs of patients and develops and implements nutritional care plans.

Documents the nutritional status and needs of hospitalized and outpatients using established standards of care and practice guidelines.

Initiates and follows patients for nutrient intake analysis and makes recommendations for continuance progression or initiation of alternate therapies.

Writes orders for diet, supplement, enteral/parenteral nutrition and laboratory data per hospital policy.

Provides counseling and education to patients and their families regarding various topics in medical nutrition therapy and drug nutrient interaction.

Serves as a clinical nutrition resource and subject matter expert to physicians, patients, and staff.

Participates in departmental performance improvement activities and training.

Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS                                                                                        

Bachelor’s degree in relevant field.

Certification in relevant specialty or field.

Minimum 5 years of relevant experience.

DEPARTMENT ADDENDUM

Department Specific Functions

This position will work closely with the Section Chief of the Division of Laparoendoscopic and Bariatric Surgery to ensure quality patient care for all active patients.

This individual will be primarily responsible for the provision of high-quality, cost-effective medical nutrition therapy to bariatric patients of all ages through an interdisciplinary health care team approach. Completes assessments of oral, enteral, parenteral, and transitional feeding therapies. Plans, implements, monitor, evaluates, and documents patient’s response to medical & surgical nutrition therapy. Participates in departmental performance improvement activities, orientation and training and interdisciplinary patient care activities. Serves as a clinical nutrition resource to patients, physicians, and staff. Participates in bariatric educational sessions and leads support groups. Assists in maintaining and upholding accreditation guidelines as set forth by MBSAQIP. Performs comprehensive nutrition assessments and reassessments based on calculated or established needs, with measurable goals consistent with the patients’ plan of care. Perform pre-operative and post-operative nutritional evaluation, support, and therapy for bariatric & reflux patients.  Help with performance of investigational research. Will participate in pre and post operative bariatric patient care. Participates and assists with bariatric informational sessions and support groups.
