Clinical Coding Documentation Strategist
Overview Pay range for this position is $36.68 - $54.40/hour. Actual pay is based on years of licensure. POSITION SUMMARY: The Clinical Coding Documentation Strategist leads projects and teams that translate data into actionable information. These teams assist leadership with decision making for operational initiatives and strategic priorities, including improved financial performance, data integrity and publicly reported coded outcomes. Provides guidance, support and oversight to OSF Revenue Cycle teams for opportunities identified with strategic or high-risk diagnoses or conditions using clinical knowledge, established guidelines and supportive clinical indicators. Works collaboratively with medical staff, coders and CDI specialists to promote consistency in determining best practice in determining threshold for support of clinical conditions within the health record. Responsible for strengthening internal processes for identification of standard capture of risk adjustment coding variables impacting quality measures such as mortality observed to expected, patient safety indicators and the like. Collaborates with providers on strengthening clinical support for diagnoses and escalates as necessary to appropriate leadership when the medical record appears to lack evidence-based clinical criteria for a diagnosis or there are opportunities or trends identified across service lines, facilities or providers. Qualifications REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Education: Bachelor’s degree in Nursing Experience: 3 years experience in hospital coding OR 3 years RN experience hospital L icensure/ Certification: Registered Nurse License in IL or MI AND Must hold one of the following certifications: RHIA (Registered Health Information Administrator), CCS (Certified Coding Specialist), CCDS (Certified Clinical Documentation Specialist), OR (American Health Information Management Association Certified Coding Specialist AHIMA-CCS certification which can be obtained within 12 months of hire) Other Skills/ Knowledge: Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Solid computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft software. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to be detail oriented. Advanced knowledge of ICD10-CM/PCS (International Classification of Disease, Procedure Coding System) and CPT/HCPCS (Current Procedural Terminology/Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System) coding guidelines. Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy/physiology, disease processes, medical records and hospital procedures including standard practices for documentation across hospital services. Proficiency in EMR (Electronic Medical Record) functionality. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively via written and verbal means. Strong communication skills are essential due to frequent interactions with healthcare providers, leaders, peers, and other OSF mission partners. Solid analytical & clinical skills with the ability to assess entity and Ministry-wide impact of audit results. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Experience: Experience working with populations and variables to affect outcome Other Skills/ Knowledge: Fluency with advanced understanding of both MS (Medicare Severity) and APR DRG (All Patient Refined - Diagnosis Related Groups) methodologies as well as publicly reported hospital data and impact of risk adjustment variables. Direct experience with chart quality audits and/or appeal response writing. Prior audit experience with demonstrated ability to develop clear and informative reports of findings.
