Position Purpose: 

Under the direction of Assistant Project Manager,or Superintendent performs work involving the operation and maintenance of the sewage treatment facility, pump stations, Easton beach UV station ,and CSO facilities.Troubleshoots,reports findings to Assistant Superintendent, provides input for corrective actions as well as implementation of corrective actions as directed. Maintains plant grounds to include snow removal, painting, and groundskeeping.

Primary Duties/Responsibilities: 

Tends automatic and semi-automatic machines and related equipment including pumps, engines, generators, valves, gates, mixers, conveyors, blowers, chemical feed and odor control.Monitors control panels and adjusts valves and gates manually or by remote control to regulate flow.Monitors flow meters, gauges, flow ratios, pressures and related controls through instrument panels, computer terminals and programmable logic control units in the assigned area.Monitors and records operating conditions observations and data in area shift log.Ensures conformance to process specifications. Troubleshoots and diagnoses operational problems and takes corrective action per procedure. Verifies and reports suspected malfunctions and variances to supervisor.Performs adjustments to equipment as needed to assure proper operation.Performs field tests (chemical, physical and biological) in order to pace chemical dosages for process and odor control units or alter unit processes.Samples wastewater, sludge and records H2S gasses according to schedule.May service automatic samplers i.e. replace tubes and unit programs.Monitors process chemical supplies and recommends reorder.Performs lab tests applicable to permit testing and related reports per procedure.Performs instrument calibration for portable meters including, but not limited to, dissolvedoxygen, pH, H2S, percent oxygen, lower explosive limit.Performs manual labor including filling and emptying of machine bins and cleaning equipment, facilities and grounds as required. Performs minor maintenance including, but not limited to, routine preventive maintenance,lubrication and minor adjustments.Operates vehicles for plant operational purposes.Practices good housekeeping and follows all safety procedures.Assigns, monitors & reviews accuracy of work, notifies management of any in-discrepancies, work time is spent performing many of the same duties of those in the group.Models and teaches compliance with all work practices, policies and procedures.Must follow established operational, process control, safety and emergency response procedures.Must adhere to facility attendance notification procedures and work schedule.May recommend or adapt procedures, techniques, tools, materials and/or equipment to meet special needs. Is expected to suggest process improvements.Frequent contact with plant operators and other personnel in order to understand issues.Frequent contact with less experienced maintenance personnel, training, coaching specific activities (intermittent, on an occasional basis, etc.)Assists in other areas of the plant as needed. May assist with orienting or training new or less experienced Operators.Operate disinfection system (Easton beach UV); assure sampling procedures are followed as required.May operate landscaping and snow removal equipment as required.Follow all PPE and safety related procedures.May be required to participate in confined space activities.

Work Environment:

Spends 100% of the time in the operations environment. Typically spends 25 – 35% of time exposed to outdoor and sometimes inclement weather.Possible Work Hazards: May be exposed to possible operations hazards including fumes, dust, toxic and caustic chemicals, noise, rotating machinery, high pressure and hot and cold temperatures, slippery surfaces, water and electrical hazards.

Qualifications

Education/Experience/Background: 

High School Diploma/GED is required.Some experience in a related position and environment is preferred.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: 

Must demonstrate a working ability to use computer programs for process control.Must have the ability to read, write and comprehend English (operational, process, safety and quality instructions). Must have the ability to perform basic mathematical calculations.Must demonstrate ability to work in a team environment and willingness to assume additional or new responsibilities readily.

Required Certification/Licenses/Training: 

Must possess a valid driver's license and a safe driving record.Must be able to pass a drug test and a criminal background check.Must obtain a valid Grade II Wastewater Treatment Plant Operators Certificate issued by the State of Rhode Island within one year of appointment to position.

Physical Requirements:

Amount of time spent – Standing 25%, Walking 75% for as many as five miles per shift.Requires close visual and hearing observation to detect non-conformance and machine malfunction.Constantly uses hands to finger, handle or feel and frequently reaches with hands and arms. Works in various positions; works on ladders, catwalks, and supports at heights of 50 feet above the ground; and works with hands extended above and below head and body up to 40 minutes using hand tools weighing up to 15 pounds. Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds distances of 10 feet. Occasional stooping, bending or kneeling and entering confined spaces.
