The Vessel
REV Ocean is unlike any other ship. It is equipped with some of the most sophisticated facilities onboard for carrying out cutting-edge ocean science, as well as offering charter opportunities designed to integrate exploration, adventure, and science. REV Ocean will operate as a research vessel for 2/3 of the year and be available for charters for 1/3 of the year.

The Chief Officer is the leader of the deck department and as such, is responsible for supervising and encouraging the deck team. He/ she is a senior watchkeeping officer and therefore assumes both bridge navigational and department management responsibilities. Furthermore, the Chief Officer is deputy to the Captain.
Responsibilities and DutiesKey responsibilities and duties include:
Comply with and enforce the “Captain’s Standing Orders”.Support the Captain in ensuring the ship’s compliance with company policies and procedures as well as international, state, or local maritime regulations.Support the Captain in ensuring the ship’s compliance with International Safety Management (ISM), classification society rules, and Maritime Insurance, within his/her area of responsibility. Support the Captain in achieving REV Objectives (safety, quality and environmental). Promote QHSE awareness in all tasks and operations on board and encourage crew to report any issues, discrepancies, accidents, or incidents.Lead by example in demonstrating the correct QHSE behaviour and through the implementation of QHSE programmes.Assist the Captain as required, including during port authority visits, inspections, and audits.Provide safety inductions and department specific training for new personnel in his/her departmentAssist in operational planning, including maintenance periods such as drydocking and yard periodsMaintain order, discipline, cleanliness, and preservation of the vesselBe Familiar with all emergency procedures and assist the Captain in emergency situations. Fill the role of fire leader above deck.Maintain stability and trim of vessel to ensure statutory criteria complianceEnsure the vessel Permit to Work (PTW) system is fully implemented and maintained in accordance with company procedures Ensuring on board training manuals, LSA and firefighting manuals are always correct and up to date In charge of garbage management planImplement the actions and procedures to meet the prevention and control of pollution plan adopted on boardManage the maintenance and service of all lifesaving, fire-fighting appliances and watertight integrity as required by statuteFollow up of vessel class status.Manage tank maintenance, including scheduling, coordination, and preparation for tank cleaning,Act as the Ship Security Officer or his/her deputy, if required by the Ship Security PlanAssisting with the development of all risk assessments (RA) and management of the RAEnsure Risk Assessments (RAs) are completed for deck activities as required.Assume the medical officer role and responsibility for the medical locker in the absence of Medic/ Doctor.Liaise with the Chief Engineer to plan the supply and consumption of fuel oil and freshwater to maintain the vessel stability and have sufficient supplies for the voyage.Manage plans, manuals, and equipment certificates within area of responsibility Hold daily deck department meetings to plan the workday.Take part in WEC (Working Environment Committee) meetings, if requested.Organize watchkeeping in ports and provide safe means of access.Watchkeeping on the bridge, including supervision and management of other watchkeepers and support as requested (or required).Navigation operations as required, checking drafts prior to departure.Ensure all bridge logbooks and required documents are filled in correctly.Ensure the deck department personnel are aware of safety protocols and are correctly inducted and trained in on board procedures, duties, and requirements for required activities in all operational modes.In charge of loading and unloading operations.In charge of lifting appliances.Communicate daily information, schedule changes and upcoming events to all deck personnel.Support career development in the deck team, through management, performance evaluations and training needs review.Ensure safety procedures for deck operations are in place and followed by all personnel working in the deck department.Manage, maintain and coordinate operations and maintenance schedules in all deck spaces and areas - This includes but is not limited to arranging, organizing, and supervising (and evaluating) service contractors/ subcontractors when repairs and/or maintenance are required.Responsible for budget management, inventory and purchasing of LSA/ firefighting equipment.Responsible for budget management, inventory and purchasing of deck appliances, supplies, spare parts, and consumables and bridge equipment.Liaise with the Chief Engineer to develop the maintenance program for auxiliary equipment on deck, such as cranes, booms, winches, etc.Ensuring deck equipment and cargo (including science equipment) are secure as required and the exterior of the vessel is prepared for sea voyage prior to departures from portOrganize the deck for cargo transfer operations observing the proper conditions for operationAssist in the preparation of charter accounts as requiredEnsure charter receipts and invoices are collected, ordered and presented appropriatelyThis job description should not be interpreted as a complete summary of job responsibilities, or the limitation of job holder accountability.
