CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER (CEO)

 

PURPOSE:

The Health Systems Trust (HST) wishes to appoint a Chief Executive Officer to provide leadership, secure sustainability funding, develop and execute strategic plans and organisational policies, and ensure good governance of HST.

The CEO is a visionary and dynamic public health expert who is responsible for providing strategic, financial and people leadership for HST, working closely with the Board of Trustees and senior leadership team.

The role requires taking accountability for the success of the organisation and creating an environment for continued growth in the South African health system. The incumbent will collaborate and establish networks with clients and stakeholders, ensuring that these are efficiently managed, and lead teams effectively to support the organisation's mission.

The position is based at the HST Midrand office. This is a fixed-term contract position, renewable based on the availability of funding.


PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS

The candidates may emerge from the health sector, non-profit organisations, health-related private-sector companies, and research institutions, and will have the following essential requirements:

 

Education and qualificationsA Health Sciences degree and a Master's level qualification in Health – Clinical or Basic SciencesA postgraduate qualification in Public Health or Global HealthA Leadership and Management qualification or equivalentA relevant PhD qualification is preferred and ideal.

 

Experience

A career path that prepared the candidate for the role includes positions held as CEO, Chief Director, Executive Director, and Senior Director or equivalent, with the following experience:

Eight years' experience in public health and/or a similar area of expertise at senior executive management level
Experience with development and execution of business strategy, working with the BoardProven experience in executing organisational growth and leading a successful entity of similar or larger size
Proven experience in governance, with a strong understanding of Board dynamics, regulatory frameworks, and the ability to ensure organisational compliance with relevant laws and industry standards
Demonstrated expertise in stakeholder management, including cultivating and maintaining strong relationships with key internal and external stakeholders, while aligning organisational goals with stakeholder interests
Extensive experience in overseeing risk management processes, ensuring the organisation identifies, evaluates, and mitigates potential risks to maintain operational stability and complianceProven experience in business development, resource mobilisation, and fundraising, leading to organisational growth and expansionA recognised healthcare leader with a proven positive impact on the health sector locally and/or globallyUnderstanding of research implementation science, and ability to oversee research and health programmes, ensuring collaboration and integrationFamiliarity with diverse business functions and programme design, planning and implementationA track record in talent management strategies including motivating, developing, retaining, coaching and mentoring high-performing and results-orientated teams
Appreciation of knowledge management and its contribution to policy formation and decision-makingA track record in scholarly writing and health research publications.

REMUNERATION

A competitive salary package commensurate with the successful candidate's experience and qualifications and in line with HST's Job Grading System will be offered.
