Chaplain & Interfaith Coordinator
Shenandoah University’s Office of Spiritual Life is accepting applications for a Chaplain and Interfaith Coordinator. This is a full-time benefited position on our main Winchester, Virginia campus. The Chaplain & Interfaith Coordinator (CIC) is in ministry with students, employees, and community members by providing program leadership and pastoral care. The successful candidate is an independent thinker and planner who takes the initiative to be part of the Spiritual Life Team and Student Affairs staff as they provide nurturing support and encouragement to enhance diverse communities at SU during busy and slow seasons. The CIC works with the team to plan, promote, implement, and assess programming as we educate and inspire our community. As a key member of the Office of Spiritual Life, the CIC is a non-anxious presence to our students. The CIC reports to the University Chaplain. Program leadership that supports students, employees, and community members: Plan, promote, implement, and assess programs such as weekly worship services, chaplains in the Residence Halls, Monthly Movie Night, Religious, Secular, and spiritual (RSSO) dinners and other support, celebrations of religious holidays, and small group facilitation in cooperation with the Spiritual Life Team. This may include sharing preaching responsibilities on and off campus. A major part of this program leadership includes developing and coordinating an “RSSO Council” that periodically gathers the multi-faith student clubs and organizations and provides mentorship and support to its student leaders and staff/faculty advisors. Pastoral care: Provide pastoral care to students, employees, and community members. Collaboration at SU: Collaborate with other offices that promote and support student leadership and well-being, such as SOAR, The Counseling Center, The Center for Civic Engagement, SULA, The [Not Just] Women’s Center, The Mosaic Center, and other departments. Other collaborations may include the College of Arts and Sciences, Conservatory, Nursing, and Health Professions. United Methodist Church (UMC): Liaise with the UMC’s Campus Ministry Association and Virginia Annual Conference to nurture the relationship between the UMC and SU. Marketing and Promotion: Coordinate Spiritual Life marketing and promotion through social media and OMC channels; assist in creating the periodic newsletter and write at least two reflections each semester. Other duties as assigned Required Skills Essential Skills and Responsibilities + Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills + Competency in helping persons of all ages explore vocation and moral/ethical issues, especially college students in their diverse developmental and experiential stages + The ability to use sound judgment and physically lead student groups with little supervision during programming + Competency in and willingness to learn about all kinds of diversity, inclusion, and equity, especially as they relate to religious, secular, and spiritual identities (RSSIs) + Equipped to prepare students for growing religious diversity in our local and global communities + Social media competency with Instagram, Facebook, and other platforms + Knowledge of, or willingness to learn, Canva to create promotional materials + Assessment for monthly reports: work in conjunction with the Spiritual Life Program Coordinator & University Chaplain on any additional assessment, such as gathering information for accrediting bodies like SACS, etc., as necessary + Knowledge of, or willingness to learn, the workings of the United Methodist Church + Time management, administrative, and organizational skills + Proficiency in, or willingness to learn, computer skills for platforms such as Google and Microsoft + Ability to lift up to 25 pounds + Valid driver’s license with the ability to become a university-approved driver is required Required Experience + Experience working in higher education and event/program planning is preferred + CPR and knowledge of first aid are desired + Bachelor’s Degree; Master’s Degree in a field related to ministry, either earned or in progress How to Apply: The complete application will include a cover letter, resume, and contact information for three professional references.
