*Chair, Department of Physiology* *University of Maryland School of Medicine* The University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) invites applications and nominations for the position of Chair, Department of Physiology. The University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM), chartered in 1807 as the College of Medicine of Maryland, is the fifth oldest and the first public medical school in the country. From the beginning, the School was part of the University of Maryland Baltimore (UMB), the founding campus of the University System of Maryland. Today, its 3,100 faculty include members of the National Academy of Medicine and the National Academy of Sciences, and a distinguished two-time winner of the Albert E. Lasker Award in Medical Research. The next Chair will be a nationally/internationally recognized physiologist with a strong track record of federally funded research and a deep knowledge of the important directions in discovery and innovation in research. They will arrive at a time of inflection and will be charged with spearheading the department’s next generation of excellence. The ideal candidate will have the opportunity to articulate and execute a vision and build upon the rich existing strengths in the Department and across the UMSOM enterprise. The opportunity exists to recruit department faculty and build a team that further advances the overarching goals and mission of the Department. They will have the experience and ability to recruit, lead, and drive research and program expansion in a complex academic environment, ensuring that the activities of the Department continue to bring value to its many internal and external stakeholders, and distinction of UMSOM nationally and internationally. The successful Chair will demonstrate the ability to effectively steward Department resources, exhibit entrepreneurial spirit, and lead through a time of change. They will bring a vision to the task of drafting the Department’s future, coupled with an ability to lead in a fashion that inspires others. Candidates must be operationally and fiscally astute, highly knowledgeable about opportunities in research and familiar with recent advances and challenges across all subspecialties. The new Chair will ensure the Department’s further development by working with senior leadership, across the UMSOM clinical and basic science departments and centers, to further identify, establish and uniquely broaden collaborative research synergies across the enterprise. Theywill also bring a passion and the skills to introduce new advances into the arenas of physiology and build upon an infrastructure that further distinguishes an already prominent Department. They will strive to help improve the health of individuals and communities through translating basic discoveries into measurable and impactful innovations in understanding the underpinnings of human disease. * * UMSOM welcomes interested candidates with a terminal degree (PhD, MD, MD/PhD or equivalent). Qualified candidates will be eligible for a faculty appointment at the Professor level in the University of Maryland School of Medicine.
