GENERAL SUMMARY 

Under occasional supervision, performs school counseling work diversified in nature, with the goal of increasing the academic, career, social, and emotional strengths of each student; assists in building community capacity to participate in academic and personal change that impacts students’ growth. School counselors should possess the knowledge, abilities, skills and attitudes necessary to plan, organize, implement and evaluate a comprehensive, developmental, results-based school counseling program that aligns with the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) National Model and the South Carolina Comprehensive Developmental Guidance and Counseling Program Model. Reports to Principal.
 ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
– Plans, organizes, implements, and evaluates a comprehensive developmental school counseling program aligning with the ASCA National Model
 -Demonstrates multicultural, ethical and professional competencies in planning, organizing, implementing and evaluating the comprehensive school counseling program
-Collaborates with stakeholders such as parents and guardians, teachers, administrators and community leaders to create learning environments that promote educational equity and success for every student
 -Practices ethical principles of the school counseling profession in accordance with the ASCA Ethical Standards for School Counselors and District policies
-Makes referrals to appropriate agencies, resources, and professionals as needed; Attends meetings with staff and service providers to discuss individual student education plans and progress
-Provides classroom guidance, individual counseling, and group counseling for students related to academic, career, and personal/social issues; consults with parents, teachers, administrators, and community agencies
-Develops and presents a developmental guidance curriculum addressing all students’ needs, including closing-the-gap activities
-Designs and implements action plans aligning with school, District, and school counseling program goals
-Collects, analyzes, and interprets relevant academic and behavioral data to develop guidance curriculum and closing-the-gap action plans
-Conducts conferences with parents, teachers, and administrators to discuss student progress and issues; assists in presenting parent/student programs as needed
-Completes annual program audit and identifies areas for improvement for the school counseling program
-Attends training, conferences, workshops, etc, as appropriate to enhance professional knowledge and skills
-Performs other related duties as required.
 JOB SPECIFICATIONS
 Education and Experience:   Job requires a Master’s degree and South Carolina certification in school (guidance) counseling. 
Knowledge: 
Has thorough knowledge of the policies, procedures, and activities of the district as they pertain to the performance of duties and responsibilities of the position. Should articulate and demonstrate an understanding of the ASCA Student Competencies and three domains of academic achievement, career planning, and personal/social development. 
Has considerable knowledge of the records, forms, and reports, which must be prepared and maintained; knowledgeable in the laws, ordinances, standards and regulations pertaining to the specific duties and responsibilities of the position; is able to plan and implement effective intervention, routine, and crisis counseling strategies as appropriate; knows how to develop effective relationships with students; and is able to make effective presentations and discuss problems and possible solutions as required. 
Skills/Effort:
Job requires the ability to use technology effectively; ability to communicate effectively, tactfully, and persuasively with students, parents, educators, and other stakeholders; demonstrates time management skills including scheduling, publicizing and prioritizing time and task; requires the ability to apply principles of logical thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions; to deal with several abstract and concrete variables. Has ability to acquire knowledge of topics related to primary occupation and have the ability to comprehend and interpret received information. Responds calmly and quickly in emergency situations; is able to handle volatile situations calmly and professionally.
 Working Conditions: 
Working condition is an office environment with little exposure to environmental/weather conditions. Physical demands are restricted to office work requiring movement/lifting items weighing up to 35 lbs. Job requires ability to work under a degree of stress related to duties that require considerable attention and meeting deadlines. 
 Responsibility:
 Supervision and management of student records maintained at the school office.
