About the job:
The Carpenter Lead position plays a key role in keeping City of Austin facilities carpentry projects completed and up to quality standards. In this hands-on position, you’ll spend your day performing carpentry duties and performing Lead duties such as conducting quality inspections, managing inventory, distributing work assignments, and supporting management with special projects. Key responsibilities include skills in utilizing applicable building codes and the ability to read and understand blueprints. Additionally, skill in estimating time, costs, and materials for carpentry projects. The ability in establishing and maintaining relationships with City employees and the public is very essential to this role. Experience in finish carpentry to include: erecting walls, tape, float and painting, installing doors and various types of door frames. Experience providing estimates, remodels and additions for commercial or residential facilities. Experience scheduling and managing multiple construction projects. Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Outlook.


Duties, Functions and Responsibilities Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
Records data concerning work activities on appropriate form or log. Operates various power saws (radial arm, skill, etc.), drills, buffers, grinders, sanders, etc. by hand. Fabricates wooden furniture and accessories (cabinets, tables, shelves, credenzas, display cases, frames, molding, railings, etc.). Reads profiles and blueprints. Installs/replaces floor & ceramic tiles. Hangs sheetrock. Tapes, floats, and texturizes sheetrock. Installs formica on wood products. Performs skilled carpentry work in construction and repair of walls, ceilings, etc. Rebuilds/repairs wooden furniture and cabinetry. Trains personnel on the job in the performance of tasks.


Responsibilities- Supervision and/or Leadership Exercised:Provides leadership, work assignments, evaluation, and guidance to others. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
Knowledge of materials, equipment, and procedures used in skilled carpentry work sufficient to perform tasks and train other personnel in the performance of tasks. Knowledge of applicable building codes. Skill in reading and understanding blueprints. Skill in estimating time, costs, and materials needed for carpentry projects. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with City employees and the public.
