GENERAL PURPOSE
Under general supervision, monitors and patrols school buildings, grounds, parking areas, and areas adjacent to school property to maintain order and security; facilitates communication between students and staff to enhance understanding and promote a safe learning environment; provides interventions; teaches and reinforces behavior expectations; conducts wellness and academic checks for all students, including but not limited to English Learners, Foster, and low income; and performs related duties as assigned.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
With direction from a school administrator, incumbents in the classification monitor and patrol school buildings, grounds, and adjacent areas to maintain order and safety and to prevent illegal acts. This classification is distinguished from Yard Supervision Aide in that a Campus Security Officer supervises student conduct to prevent vandalism, theft, or other illegal activities, while a Yard Supervision Aide maintains order outside of the classroom, under the supervision of school administrators, teachers, or support staff.
Duties

Responds to teacher requests for assistance in the classroom; assists in incidents involving students with weapons and/or under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Monitor and patrol school buildings, yards, parking areas, and adjacent areas to maintain order and prevent illegal acts. Monitor and patrol campus to maintain order, safety, and security in a school setting. Assure student compliance with school and District policies and regulations. Prepare records and reports involving incidents, field interviews, accidents, vandalism, crime, gangs, student detention, and wellness and academic checks. Interpret, apply, and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures. Perform duties with patience, tact, and good judgment within established guidelines. Facilitate communications between students, school, and District officials and staff to enhance understanding and promote a safe and secure learning environment. Learn District organization, operations, policies and objectives. Read and write English at a level required for successful job performance. Understand and follow oral and written directions. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others. Observe situations and accurately determine effective courses of action.
Education, Training, and Experience:
Graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalent. One (1) year of full time paid or volunteer security experience.
Experience working with youth in an organized setting is highly desirable.
Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements:
A valid California driver's license and the ability to maintain insurability under the District's insurance policy.
Certification of completion of school security officer training course developed by the Bureau of Investigative Services of the Department of Consumer Affairs in consultation with the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training in accordance with SB 1626 and SB 390, pursuant to California Education Code Section 38001.5.
District security attire and equipment will be supplied at District expense.
