Job Description Summary Overall administration of the University architectural planning, design, and construction projects, including new buildings or renovations. Responsible for managing small in-house design projects and managing consultants and University staff on large projects. Responsible for updating and implementing periodic updates to the Campus Master Plan working with other members of the University Campus Community and outside consultants. Working with the University Sr Administration and other Facility Management peers manage and maintain data on the University building space and condition. Advise and make recommendations to the AVP Facilities Management, the Director of Planning & Construction, and other members of the University community on all aspects of architectural design, construction, life safety, and code compliance in pursuit of the University objectives. Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned) • Manage campus design projects, in particular architectural projects, both large and small. • Administer the Campus Design & Construction Standards for the University and update periodically. • Manage campus data and information related to University space usage and utilization. • Lead the effort to update the Campus Master Plan in the next 5-10 years (the current Master Plan was adopted in 2022). • Work with the Director of Planning & Construction Services, the Director of Sustainability, and others on campus to develop and implement long-term plans to make our campus more sustainable and efficient to meet adopted University sustainability goals. • Administer project design contracts and supervise the activities of outside consultants as required to successfully complete University design projects. • Monitor project costs, progress payments, and change orders; prepare monthly comparisons of actual costs vs. budget for the University. • Develop estimated project budgets and cashflow projections for projects • Develop design and bid documents for small projects. • Maintain complete and current project files including correspondence, bulletins, shop drawings, requests for information, unresolved issues, contractor staffing and as-built drawings. • Lead the review of construction documents prepared by outside services and/or University personnel. • Assist peer engineers and others within the Facilities organization with the design and management of the architectural aspects of their projects as required. • Assist the University community in the preparation of construction programs, cost estimates, budgets, surveys, reports and specifications. • Assist the Director of Planning & Construction in conducting the general activities of the unit. • Develop a long-term familiarity and expertise with the campus culture, campus users, and space needs. • Apply safety-related knowledge, skills, and practices to everyday work. Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements) ● Master’s degree in Architecture, or the equivalent required for an Architect’s license. ● Valid license to practice Architecture in the State of Michigan, or the ability to obtain license within 9 months. Required Experience (minimum requirements) ● Seven years or more of experience in the design and construction of architectural projects involving new buildings, renovations, and remodels as Project Manager. ● Five years or more of experience working for or with higher education clients and facilities. ● Experience hiring and managing consultants and contractors. ● Experience working with and interpreting building codes including the Michigan Building Code, NFPA codes, and the Federal ADA. ● Inspection and quality control experience for construction projects ● Budget and cost estimating experience. ● Experience hiring and managing drafting/student intern staff. Desirable Education and/or Experience ● Experience working with Facility Space Management tools. ● Experience working in Facilities Management for a higher education institution. ● Experience overseeing and/or coordinating major building construction and/or maintenance projects. Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities (minimum requirements) ● Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills. ● Knowledge of current trends in higher education design issues such as teaching paradigms, space utilization, and sustainability. ● Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize multiple projects and work assignments. ● Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills. ● Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with a diverse constituency within the University and local/state and community ● Demonstrated commitment to contribute to a safe work environment. ● Experience using personal computers and basic office, design, and construction software such as spreadsheets, word processor, AutoCAD, web browser and cpm. Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities ● Experience using AutoCad and/or Revit for the design of projects. ● Experience using GIS software and Building Information Management (BIM), computer aided design application software, such as MEP, CloudWorx, SketchUp, Chief Architect ● Experience with CMMS software for space management. ● Demonstrated success in, or potential future contributions to, working with persons from diverse backgrounds, creating a sense of belonging, and fostering a fair, objective, welcoming place to work for persons with a wide variety of personal characteristics and viewpoints. ** Language, Mathematics and/or Reasoning Skills Work Environment and/or Physical Demands While performing the duties of this job the employee is occasionally required to stand; climb or balance; stoop; kneel; crouch or crawl; reach with hands and arms; and taste or smell.
