Building Official

Position Summary: The Building Official is responsible for overseeing the enforcement of building codes, zoning laws, and other regulations related to construction and development within greater the Atlanta area. This role involves reviewing plans, issuing permits, conducting inspections, and ensuring that all construction activities meet City Codes, State Codes and any other applicable legal and safety standards.

Key Responsibilities:

Code Enforcement: Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal building codes, zoning regulations, and ordinances. Interpret and apply codes to various construction projects. Ensure that all applications meet all requirements prior to the issuance of any permits.Permit Processing: Review and approve building permit applications. Ensure that all required documentation and fees are submitted and processed correctly.Inspections: Conduct on-site inspections of construction sites, existing buildings, and property renovations to verify compliance with building codes and safety standards.Plan Review: Evaluate architectural and engineering plans for code compliance. Collaborate with architects, engineers, and contractors to address code-related issues.Compliance and Enforcement: Investigate complaints and violations related to building codes and regulations. Issue citations and work with property owners and contractors to resolve compliance issues.Public Interaction: Provide guidance and information to the public, contractors, and developers regarding building codes, permit processes, and construction regulations. Ensure that all guidance to the public is provided in writing to avoid any confusion.Record Keeping: Maintain accurate and detailed records of inspections, permits, code violations, and other relevant documentation.Team Coordination: Work closely with other municipal departments and officials to coordinate activities and ensure comprehensive compliance with all relevant regulations.Training and Development: Stay updated on changes to building codes, regulations, and industry best practices. Attend training sessions and professional development opportunities as needed.

Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor’s degree in construction management, architecture, civil engineering, or a related field. A combination of education and relevant work experience may be considered.Experience: Minimum of [3] years of experience in building inspection, construction management, or a related field. Experience in a supervisory or leadership role is preferred.Licensing and Certification: Certification as a Building Official or Inspector through a recognized professional organization (e.g., International Code Council (ICC)) is required or preferred.Knowledge: In-depth understanding of building codes, zoning laws, and construction standards. Familiarity with local, state, and federal regulations is essential.Skills: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities. Proficiency in using relevant software and technology. Experienced in problem solving and teamwork with other professionals.Physical Requirements: Ability to perform inspections in various weather conditions and access construction sites, which may involve climbing, walking, and lifting.

Work Environment: The Building Official will work both in an office setting and on-site at construction locations. Some travel within the city and occasional evening or weekend work may be required.
