The Technology and Operations Department of the NBCUniversal Boston Media Center (BMC) has a great opportunity for a Freelance Broadcast Systems Engineer to join the team. Reporting to the Engineering Manager, the Freelance Broadcast Systems Engineer is a part-time position that plays a key role in the team responsible for the upkeep of the facility, and the systems of NBC10 Boston, NBC Sports Boston, Telemundo Boston, and New England Cable News.

In addition to maintaining the current systems, you will also be involved in implementing new systems within our mission critical, multi-business content creating environment. Another exciting part of this opportunity is that you’ll get to work with the team who use the technology by providing support, tech solutions and helping them learn the operational SOPs.

As a Freelance Broadcast Systems Engineer, you will be entrusted to help maintain a facility built around modern technologies such as:

Video/Audio-Over-IP core infrastructureDANTE audio mixing and routingProduction automation with robotic studio camerasVideo encoding for contribution and distribution

Responsibilities & Expectations:

Work with internal / external Technical Support teams to ensure timely resolution of technical requests and issues.Support Newsroom and Operations users by providing technical support for systems, infrastructure, and applications, including root cause analysis.Maintain workflows related to all broadcast systems including linear and IP fabric for video infrastructures, virtualized Windows & Linux environments, encode / decode platforms, newsgathering tools, NLE, Media Asset Management systems, distribution / transmission systems and other workflow tools.Follow Change Management policies and assess all issues, adds, changes to mitigate potential system impact.Follow best practices and implement new technologies & deliver projects on time & within budget.Participate in the testing of new technology.Install, commission, and configure new technology.Produce work that is consistently professional, reliable and detail oriented. Support Facility as needed. Other duties as deemed necessary.

Qualifications

A systems engineer dedicated to help our business win by supporting mission critical broadcast and IT systems, projects, and new initiatives.Experience supporting a major market or network news operation or in a similar role with a media company, systems integrator, an ISP, or other relevant industryExperience in supporting large scale systems to support business needsExperience supporting advanced workflows within a digital media environment, including virtualized systems, encoding, and decoding, and signal distributionExperience with Visio and AutoCADKnowledgeable with IT routers, switches, firewalls, VLANs, and other networking standardsProficient in A/V file transcoding, data archiving processes, and video compression technologiesHands on experience with support of non-linear edit systemsKnowledge and experience with hardware virtualizationKnowledge of media workflow tools and production systemsKnowledge of distribution systems including RF, streaming, and satelliteKnowledge of newsgathering and communications systemsPositive work ethic and ability to work well in groupsAbility to communicate and interact effectively with diverse audiences across different departmentsKnowledge of standard engineering processes such as change controlMust be keen to learn and develop new skillsAbility to work on own initiative and determine prioritiesExcellent organization and communication skills
