Breaking News Reporter
The Houston Chronicle is looking for a sharp journalist who thrives in the urgency of breaking news. This job isn’t just about covering what’s happening—it’s about staying ahead of the curve. We need someone who can spot a story before it goes viral, dig into trends on Google, Reddit, X, and Facebook, and turn that insight into coverage that keeps Houstonians informed. If you’re competitive, quick on your feet, and eager to own the biggest story of the day, this is the role for you.
This is a key position in our newsroom, covering everything from public safety to extreme weather, cultural moments, and whatever else Houston is talking about. We are looking for a self-starter who thrives under pressure, knows how to identify fresh angles that sets our reporting apart, and can build on breaking news with smart follow-ups that keep readers coming back.
Beyond writing quickly and clearly, this role demands a digital-first mindset. You should be comfortable working across platforms—text, video, photos—and writing search-friendly, shareable headlines that make an impact. If you have experience digging into court records, public documents, and databases, that’s a plus.
Some of the most important stories break on nights or weekends, so flexibility is key for anyone interested in this role.
What will you do?
Jump on breaking news fast, but also look ahead, anticipating what’s coming next. Identify trending stories on search and social media before they explode. Own the biggest story of the day and find angles that set us apart from the competition. Work closely with editors, reporters, and our audience team to maximize impact. Write with speed, accuracy, and creativity, crafting headlines that drive readership and engagement.
