Botany Manager
Overview

Hire Resolve’s Client is seeking a knowledgeable and passionate Botany Manager to oversee the cultivation, care, and management of plant collections and botanical programs at our Cape Town facility. This role requires expertise in plant sciences, strong leadership skills, and a commitment to environmental sustainability and biodiversity.

Key Responsibilities:

Plant Collection and Maintenance:

Oversee the care, propagation, and maintenance of plant species, ensuring optimal health and growth. Develop and implement planting schedules, irrigation systems, and pest control strategies. Conduct regular inspections of plant collections to identify issues and apply solutions.

Staff and Team Management:

Recruit, train, and supervise a team of horticulturists, botanists, and groundskeepers. Schedule and delegate tasks to ensure efficient workflow and project completion. Foster a collaborative and safe working environment that encourages professional growth.

Research and Development:

Conduct research on native and exotic plant species, focusing on conservation and sustainability. Develop and implement innovative botanical practices and techniques. Collaborate with academic institutions and research organizations on botanical projects.

Education and Community Engagement:

Organize workshops, tours, and educational programs to promote plant science and environmental awareness. Partner with local schools, universities, and community groups for outreach initiatives. Curate informative content for signage, publications, and digital platforms.

Facility and Resource Management:

Oversee the maintenance of greenhouses, gardens, and botanical displays. Manage resources effectively, including tools, equipment, and materials. Monitor budgets, plan expenditures, and secure funding or sponsorships as needed.

Environmental Sustainability:

Implement eco-friendly practices to conserve water, soil, and other resources. Promote biodiversity through the introduction and preservation of rare or endangered species. Stay updated on local and global trends in sustainability and conservation.

Qualifications and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in Botany, Horticulture, Plant Science, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred). Proven experience in botany or horticultural management, with a focus on leadership roles. Strong knowledge of South African flora and ecosystems. Experience in pest management, soil science, and plant propagation techniques. Familiarity with botanical garden operations and greenhouse management.

Passion for plants and environmental conservation. Excellent leadership, organizational, and problem-solving skills. Strong communication abilities for team coordination and public engagement. Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines effectively. Proficiency in using technology for plant management and research.

Work Conditions:

Primarily outdoor work in gardens, greenhouses, and field sites. Flexible schedule with occasional weekend or holiday duties. Physically demanding tasks, including lifting and working in various weather conditions.
