Bookkeeper / Assistant to Accountant

Key Responsibilities:
Supervision of Accounts Clerks:
Oversee and provide guidance to accounts clerks to ensure that day-to-day accounting tasks are completed accurately and on time. Assist in the training and development of junior accounting staff. Review and verify the accuracy of financial records submitted by accounts clerks. Reconciliations:
Perform monthly bank, credit card, and supplier reconciliations. Reconcile intercompany transactions, ensuring accuracy and resolving discrepancies as needed. Assist in the reconciliation of balance sheet accounts. Bookkeeping up to Trial Balance:
Maintain accurate records of all financial transactions, ensuring compliance with company policies and accounting standards. Process invoices, receipts, payments, and general ledger entries. Prepare and maintain the trial balance and assist in the preparation of monthly and annual financial reports. Payroll Function:
Oversee the full payroll process, including salary calculations, deductions, and ensuring compliance with local tax regulations. Ensure that all statutory payments, such as PAYE, UIF, and SDL, are processed and submitted timeously. Prepare and distribute payslips, and respond to employee payroll-related inquiries. Additional Support:
Assist the Senior Bookkeeper with month-end and year-end close procedures. Prepare documentation for audits and work closely with auditors during the audit process. Contribute to the development and improvement of accounting systems and processes. Key Qualifications & Requirements:
Education & Experience:
Matric (Grade 12) with a relevant qualification in accounting or finance (e.g., bookkeeping certificate, diploma, or degree) is an advantage. Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in bookkeeping, ideally within an engineering or similar industry. Solid understanding of accounting principles, reconciliation processes, and payroll management. Familiarity with accounting software (e.g., Pastel, Xero, QuickBooks, Sage, etc.) is preferred Skills & Competencies:
Strong attention to detail with high accuracy in data entry. Good understanding of payroll systems and tax legislation. Ability to supervise and mentor junior staff effectively. Excellent organizational skills and the ability to prioritize tasks. Strong communication skills (written and verbal) in English. Ability to work independently and as part of a team Additional Information:
