What You’ll Do
This is a full-time salaried position dedicated to training and development of blasters and other field-based employees at all stages (new hires, employees requiring retraining, employees seeking to deepen their knowledge and technical skills). This position requires exceptional communication and organizational skills as well as technical knowledge/background in related fields.
This role covers territories across Canada East, Central, and the Maritimes, including Nova Scotia, Quebec, and Ontario, with regular travel required to support training initiatives in these regions.
As the Blaster Training Specialist, you will deliver comprehensive training programs for blasters while ensuring compliance with Dyno Nobel’s safety standards and regulatory requirements across Canada East. Other duties will include:
Assist in the development and delivery of training programs for blasters and blasters apprentices and helpers, which will combine classroom and on the job segments.
Develop training schedules by coordinating with regional managers and the blaster assessment program already in place.
Coordinate with local blast supervisors and blasters to choose adequate training sites for field training opportunities.
Develop a deep knowledge of regional blasting regulations and understand that blasters will be coming from other jurisdictions, which may require specialized training.
Become expert with all products currently offered for use in commercial explosives operations and be able to relay that understanding to trainees.
Assist on incident investigations to determine the root cause of a blasting incident and help implement corrective actions through training and/or coaching and development.
Teach the importance of good product management on the bench and the methods for good inventory maintenance, control, and housekeeping.
Be able to potentially train individuals in other regulatory requirements (TDG, Explosives Act, Bulk Regulations, WHIMIS) and provincially (OH&S)
Potentially offer customer training as well if required.
Ensure that all training is tracked in appropriate databases
Ensuring that company policies, safe work practices, hazard analysis, and standard operating procedures are up-to-date and followed by the trainees.
What We’re Looking For:
Education
Minimum educational requirements: Post secondary education with a degree in Business, Science, or related field.
As an alternate, completion of high school (Grade 12) with extensive experience in the related fields.
Fluency in spoken and written English is a requirement. Ability to speak and write in French would be considered an asset.
Experience
Minimum 5 years of experience as a senior blaster or as a trainer in explosives (Quarry, Open Pit, Urban blasting).
Having a valid blaster ticket would be considered an asset.
Experience as a trainer, safety, or related operational training.
Technical:
Computer literacy in Microsoft Office Products, including Excel, Word, and Power Point.
Comply with all government regulation (including NRCan, TDG, OH&S and WHMIS) and company policies.
Comply with all other government regulations and laws in accordance with blasting and explosives policies.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements
Work in the field and in an office environment.
Regular travelling will be required.
Must be in good physical condition.
May need to occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
