The Biomedical Equipment Technician (BMET) is responsible for the installation, maintenance, calibration, repair, and safety testing of medical equipment used in healthcare facilities. This role ensures that all equipment operates within manufacturer's specifications to support patient care and compliance with relevant safety standards.
Job Requirements Knowledge of/Skill/Ability to: • Problem-solving and analytical skills to identify problems and make necessary repairs. • Strong communication and interpersonal skills for collaboration with clinical staff and team members. • Writing skills and attention to detail to maintain accurate, complete records. • Ability to multitask effectively, balancing repair work, preventive maintenance schedules and administration responsibilities. • Utilize hospital systems, electronic health records, and any other computerized maintenance management systems.
License/Certification Certification by the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) or equivalent as a Certified BMET or CBET (must provide a copy of diploma or certification. If military-trained BMETs must provide a copy of the military training records verifying completion of a Biomedical Equipment Specialist program.
Education and/or Experience Associate’s degree in Biomedical Equipment Technology, Electronics, or a related field approved by the hiring manager. Equivalent military training (e.g., U.S. Army MOS 68A, Navy HM-BMET, or Air Force 4A2X1) may substitute for formal education. Prefer two or more years of experience in a biomedical equipment maintenance role, preferably in a hospital or healthcare setting. Hands-on experience with a wide range of medical equipment preferred.
Physical Demands and Work Environment Conditions / ADA Compliance Must be able to lift, carry, push, and pull equipment or tools weighing up to 50 pounds regularly, and occasionally heavier loads with assistance. Frequent standing, walking, bending, and kneeling are required during the installation, inspection, and repair of equipment. Manual dexterity and fine motor skills are necessary to handle small tools and equipment components. Ability to climb ladders, crouch in confined spaces, and reach overhead when accessing equipment. Extended periods of concentration required while troubleshooting or diagnosing equipment issues. Visual acuity to read schematics, technical manuals, and equipment displays, as well as distinguish colors on wiring and screens. Potential exposure to hazardous physical, chemical, radiological, and biological agents and loud noise.
