Biomechanical Engineer

The Biomechanical Engineer in the St. Jude Gait and Mobility Lab is responsible for developing 3D motion analysis protocols for children and adults with a range of functional abilities. They will develop and implement new approaches to wearable activity monitors and inertial sensors in the Lab and beyond, harnessing their expertise in coding, machine learning and AI. The successful candidate will combine excellent technical skills with great communication and empathy to deliver the very best results for patients with cancer, childhood cancer survivors or catastrophic neurological diseases of childhood. Job Responsibilities: Perform 3D motion analyses of children and adults for research protocols, including operating, processing, maintenance, testing and calibration of a range of measurement systems including 3D Motion Capture (Vicon Nexus), EMG and Pedobarography. Conduct accurate marker placement and input anthropometric measures for biomechanical model calculations and provide expertise on model definitions and limitations to enhance data interpretation. Develop and implement new approaches to wearable activity monitors and inertial sensors in the Lab and remotely, using expertise in coding, machine learning and AI. Maintain the technical standards of the lab, using international best practice. Provide technical expertise to medical and scientific staff relating to precision measurement, analysis and understanding of gait deficits and movement disorders. Contribute to scientific manuscripts, research grants and conference presentations. Performs other related duties as assigned or directed to meet the goals and objectives of the department and the institution. Maintains regular and predictable attendance. Minimum Education and/or Training: Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Clinical Biomechanics or relevant discipline with a preference for a Biomedical Engineering degree. Masters or Doctoral degree in Engineering, Clinical Biomechanics or relevant discipline preferred. Broad understanding of the technical requirements of a 3D motion analysis lab. Minimum Experience: Five (5) years of experience in gait/motion analysis testing with Bachelor’s Degree OR Two (2) years of experience with Master’s or Doctoral Degree. Experience working with 3D motion capture system (Vicon Nexus) required. Experience working with wearable activity monitors and inertial sensors required. Experience working with clinical populations required. Experience working with children in a hospital environment preferred. Experience writing/contributing to scientific manuscripts and research grants. Communication and collaboration with internal cross-functional teams and external partners preferred. Proven performance in earlier role/comparable role. Special Skills, Knowledge and Abilities: 3D motion capture system (VICON, AMTI force plates, Delsys EMG) experience. Experience coding to analyze and interpret motion analysis data using different tools (Matlab, Python, Visual 3D, OpenSim). Experience working with wearable activity monitors and inertial sensors (ActiGraph and different IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) sensors). Experience in clinical and pediatric populations. Compensation In recognition of certain U.S. state and municipal pay transparency laws, St. Jude is including a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This is an estimate offered in good faith and a specific salary offer takes into account factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets, experience and training, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the salary range and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case.
