Summary What General Information Do I Need to Know About This Position? The Government-Wide direct hire authority for Biologist GS-0401-12 is being used to fill this position. Salary: Cook, WA: $93,543 (Step 01) to $121,601 (Step 10) Seattle, WA: $97,376 (Step 01) to $126,585 (Step 10) NOTE: First time hires to the Federal Government are typically hired at the Step 01. Responsibilities As a Biologist (Research Coordinator) within the Western Fisheries Research Center, some of your specific duties will include: Coordinates Center partner relations, including acting as the Center's tribal liaison. Advise the Center Director on science direction relative to departmental, regional, and national needs. Develops, with the Center Director, and implements the center's 5-year strategic science plan. Build/Maintain critical partnerships with local, state, national, and tribal partners. Oversees external outreach/communications and internal engagement programs for the center. Physical Demands: The work is mainly sedentary and requires no special physical demands. Most of the work will be office related and entail some walking, siting, crouching, light lighting, driving an automobile and extensive time on a computer. Some tours in the field on rocky and wet terrain, and engagement in laboratory settings may be required to effectively engage regional/national dignitaries, congressional members, and agency leaders to advance USGS/WFRC science priorities and programs. The position requires the person to be mentally alert and active and sustain a high level of attention in mentally stressful circumstances posed by competing priorities and short deadlines. Travel in commercial aircraft, commercial vessels, and all forms of ground transportation, including hiking, may be required. All duties must be performed consistent with USGS and other government safety policies and practices. Work Environment: Work is performed primarily in an office setting where basic safety precautions are required. Travel for meetings, conferences, and occasional field inspections or site visits are required and may result in exposure to moderate exertion (e.g., hiking on slopes or slippery paths), inclement weather and other adverse circumstances. Travel may expose the Biologist to extreme environments and to communities with less capacity than that to which the Biologist may be accustomed. The USGS has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework and the selectee may be allowed to telework with supervisor approval. Because this position requires travel for official business, the selectee will be required to apply for a charge card within 30 calendar days of appointment. Qualifications BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Biologist, all grade levels. A. Degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. *OR* B. Combination of education and experience--courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above (24 semester hours or the equivalent in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above. For GS-12: In addition to the basic education requirements as stated above, applicants must have one year of specialized experience at or equal to the next lower grade level. Examples of experience at the GS-11 level may include: 1) independently planning and conducting comprehensive biological studies and investigations; 2) modifying and adapting standard biological techniques, processes, and procedures; 3) serving as a technical resource on biological issues. For examples 1-3, the assignments were planned and carried out independently, resolving most of the conflicts that arose, coordinating the work with others as necessary, relating new work situations to precedent ones, extending or modifying existing techniques, and interpreting and applying program policy in terms of established objectives. You must meet all qualification and eligibility requirements for the position by the closing date of the announcement.
