Job Description:
We are seeking to fill this entry-level biological scientist position with a dedicated and detail-oriented person to join our team. This position involves conducting invasive vertebrate diet identification and necropsies, managing lab operations, ensuring laboratory safety, and mentoring interns. The ideal candidate should have a strong background in biological research and excellent organizational skills.
Key Responsibilities include:
+ Conduct invasive vertebrate diet identification and necropsies, including collecting and preparing samples for diet analysis.
+ Follow pre-established necropsy procedures and perform dissection/tissue sampling.
+ Collaborate with researchers to analyze and interpret data.
+ Assist with literature reviews and data analysis.
+ Oversee and supervise undergraduate volunteers for diet preparation and necropsies.
+ Coordinate with undergraduate volunteers to ensure timely completion of tasks.
+ Provide guidance and support to volunteers as needed.
+ Maintain accurate records of volunteer hours and activities.
+ Participate in field research, including data collection and equipment maintenance, ensuring quality and safety standards.
+ Assist with other research duties, such as literature reviews and manuscript preparation.
Lab Management responsibilities include:
+ Collect, enter, and manage data related to invasive species research.
+ Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of research activities and results.
+ Coordinate and manage lab inventory, including ordering and tracking supplies.
+ Procure lab supplies, equipment, and materials.
+ Evaluate new lab supplies and technologies.
+ Coordinate with departmental staff to ensure timely delivery and installation of equipment.
+ Collaborate with researchers to exchange research materials, such as samples, equipment, and documents.
Laboratory Safety and Chemical Disposal responsibilities include:
+ Ensure lab safety and compliance with institutional and federal policies.
+ Serve as Biomedical Waste Manager and Chemical/Hazardous Waste Manager.
+ Assist with the development of protocols for environmental and safety compliance.
Mentorship Participation requires:
+ Mentor and supervise invasive lab interns in coordination with the Program Director.
+ Coordinate interns, assigned locations, intern supervisory assignments, and work locations of the various interns hired through collaborative efforts with UF, National Park Service, and US Geological Survey.
Expected Salary:
Expected salary is $18.00 per hour, commensurate with education and experience.
Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in biology or a closely related life science field.
Preferred Qualifications:
+ Excellent organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
+ Experience with identification of mammals, birds, and reptile prey items consumed by invasive vertebrates
+ Familiarity with invasive vertebrate species issues and risk screening
+ Experience with coordinating undergraduate volunteers in a laboratory setting
+ Knowledge of lab safety regulations and compliance.
