Employment Category Regular Job Summary This recruitment will be used to fill one full-time Biological Sciences Research Technician 3 position for the Corvallis Farm Unit at Oregon State University ( OSU ). The Horticulture Department’s research farms consist of over 250 acres of land with associated facilities and an extensive assortment of farming equipment. The Lewis-Brown Research Farm, where this position is located, is three miles east of the OSU campus. The research farms provide facilities and farming services to agricultural research projects at OSU , particularly the Horticulture Department. The farms are also used for Resident Instruction purposes by at least 10 different university courses. Another substantial component of the Lewis-Brown Research Farm is the development of Oregon Tilth certified “organic” ground for conducting field research consistent with expanding goals of the Horticulture Department. Key Responsibilities 50%Oversee, coordinate, and participate in all cultural activities associated with research plots, rotation crops, and grounds at the Lewis-Brown Research Farm, including irrigation and operating farm equipment to establish and maintain research field plots, rotation crops, and grounds (tillage, planting, mowing, brush removal, harvesting and pruning, and application of agricultural chemicals). Plan and schedule these activities with the Farm Manager and all farm users. Attend educational short courses and seminars to maintain Oregon Public Pesticide Applicator’s License. Keep records on pesticide applications, irrigation, and crop maps. 15%Act as liaison with Oregon Tilth to ensure compliance necessary to obtain and retain organic certification. Coordinate meetings with organic research leaders. Enhance organic production areas including but not limited to cover crops, rotation crops, soil amendments, effective insect and disease control, and soil fertility using OMRI approved fertilizers relative to crops grown. 15%Provide orientation, technical advice, and consultation to farm users on cultural practices, and farm and safety procedures. Provide guidance to faculty, staff, and students and participate in experimental designs and implementation of research projects related to organic and conventional crops. Assist instructors and provide direction to students with field labs for university courses. 10%Implement and perform maintenance and minor repairs to machinery and facilities including buildings and irrigation systems. Adapt appropriate equipment to meet the needs of the research projects. 10%Direct and train seasonal employees including planning and assigning work, approving work or effectively recommending such actions. What We Require A Bachelor’s degree in (specific area of biological science) and two years of experience related to the area of assignment at a Biological Science Research Technician 2 level. Three additional years of experience related to the area of assignment at the Biological Science Research Technician 2 level may be substituted for the Bachelor’s degree. What You Will Need + A Bachelor’s degree in (specific area of biological science) and two years of experience related to the area of assignment at a Biological Science Research Technician 2 level. + Three additional years of experience related to the area of assignment at the Biological Science Research Technician 2 level may be substituted for the Bachelor’s degree. Additional required qualifications: + B.S. in crop & soil science, agronomy, horticulture or a related field-based agricultural science or 5 years’ experience working on a public or private farm. + This position requires that the successful candidate must have or be willing to get within three months a public pesticide applicators license, endorsements to apply rodenticides, insecticides, fungicides, restricted use herbicides and a working knowledge of irrigation systems and practices. + This position requires experience in field crop planting and maintenance, equipment maintenance and repair. The candidate must show a willingness to work odd hours any day of the week to ensure field laboratory objectives are met and have a working knowledge of irrigation systems and practices. + Must be proficient or have demonstrated ability to learn the operation of both traditional size and small plot farm equipment. This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030. This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months. The ideal candidate must have good interpersonal skills. + Willingness to work at odd hours, any day of the week, in all kinds of weather and working conditions, to ensure that farm objectives are met. + The successful candidate is preferred to have experience with large to medium scale field equipment and be able to work with various pieces and sizes of equipment. Working Conditions / Work Schedule May include working ‘off-hours’ if circumstances require. Examples may include a) insecticide applications which need to be made at night, b) weekend work in times of heavy workload or if weather conditions do not permit needed tasks to be done during the week, c) equipment break-down or issues arising in the field which are preventing researchers from doing necessary tasks such as planting or harvest. Working outside in inclement weather, dust, and dirt is common. Requires being able to lift and carry heavy loads (50 lb).
