Department Summary:

The Robotics and Autonomous Systems department (L131) within the Artificial Intelligence and Autonomy Innovation Center is looking for qualified applicants for a Group Leader position for our Behavior and Control Group.  This group leader will lead an innovative team of engineers focused on technologies and solutions for sponsor needs and developing capabilities for a safer world. The right candidate will enjoy a fast-paced team environment and working with cutting-edge technology. The candidate for this position will work a wide variety of challenging activities in direct support of sponsor programs and will support MITRE’s AI and autonomy efforts.

Roles & Responsibilities:

The Group Leader (GL) is the first line technical leader focused on the rigor and technical quality of products delivered to our customers.  The GL is: 1) a key contributor to one or more projects; 2) the first-line supervisor and primary point of contact on HR matters for the technical staff in their Group; 3) the lead for their respective group, ensuring high technical quality and timely delivery of products to internal and external customers, building and shaping the group’s work,  being the primary POC for the group’s capabilities, and  overseeing the group’s lab resources and needs.  In performing these roles, the GL works with project leads, task leads, and L131 Department management to assign the right staff to tasks and projects based on the skills and capabilities required, taking into account staff development needs and desired work.  GLs provide the critical operational leadership for managing staff to deliver tangible products and achieve project-level objectives and outcomes. They are also a key part of hiring and growing our team.

Technical Contributor – Actively contributes to a technical work program and develops high quality technical products resulting in successful customer outcomesDepartment and Staff Engagement – Serves as DS for assigned staff providing technical support, conducting regular performance and development conversations, staff advocacy and recognition, and communication with Project/Task Leads on performanceTechnical Quality/Execution/Capability Development – Assists Department management and leadership team in workforce shaping, work program development, maintaining awareness of emerging technical issues and opportunitiesCollaboration and Communications – Supports regular communication between staff and Project/Task Leaders, serves as a proactive liaison between staff and Department/upper management, seeks collaboration opportunities across portfolios, and facilitates open sharing of program and/or technical area knowledge with other managers and staff

Basic Qualifications:

Typically requires a minimum of 8 years of related experience in Autonomy and AI with a Bachelor’s degree; or 6 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 3 years’ experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.Demonstrated technical depth in Autonomous and AI systems, particularly in behavior generation and control systemsPractical understanding of AI and Autonomy uses, strengths and weaknesses across different domains (DoD, Services, Intelligence Community, DHS, Industry and Academia)Ability to articulate specific autonomy challenges, discuss critical issues, and identify gapsMust be able to obtain a US Government ClearanceThis position requires a minimum of 4 days a week on-site

Preferred Qualifications:

Advanced degree in related field.Knowledge of advances of Autonomy and AI evaluation capabilities in industry and academiaWork and/or leadership of teams to implement and evaluate AI and Autonomy algorithmsDevelop, propose, and execute research in cutting edge autonomous behavior and control methodsActive Secret Clearance
