The Clinton Health Access Initiative, Inc. (CHAI) is a global health organization committed to our mission of saving lives and reducing the burden of disease in low-and middle-income countries. CHAI was founded in 2002 in response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic, with the goal of dramatically reducing the price of life-saving drugs and increasing access to these medicines in the countries with the highest burden of the disease. Over the following two decades, CHAI has expanded its focus. Today, along with HIV, we work in conjunction with our partners to prevent and treat infectious diseases such as COVID-19, malaria, tuberculosis, and hepatitis. Our work has also expanded into cancer, diabetes, hypertension, and other non-communicable diseases, and we work to accelerate the rollout of lifesaving vaccines, reduce maternal and child mortality, combat chronic malnutrition, and increase access to assistive technology. We are investing in horizontal approaches to strengthen health systems through programs in human resources for health, digital health, and health financing. With each new and innovative program, our strategy is grounded in maximizing sustainable impact at scale, ensuring that governments lead the solutions, that programs are designed to scale nationally, and learnings are shared globally.

Program Overview
One billion people in low-and middle-income countries live with vision impairment that could be easily corrected with a pair of glasses. This includes millions of school-aged children and more than 500 million adults over the age of 40 who simply need reading glasses. Not having access to eyeglasses has a profound impact on people’s ability to learn, earn and live healthy and productive lives. Over the past decades, NGOs have put this issue on the map and tested cost-effective approaches to getting eyeglasses to millions. We now need to build on these learnings to scale glasses to the 1 billion people that need them.
CHAI has experience in tackling access gaps on a global scale. We are now leveraging our partnerships with governments, private sector, the World Health Organization and international organizations like EYElliance and VisionSpring to make access to eyeglasses more affordable and available to people with vision impairments in the countries with the highest need. We work to develop and implement country-specific plans for scaling cost-effective delivery models and introduce innovative tools that make services cheaper and faster. We shape markets and strengthen regulations, so eyeglasses become more widely available. We work to increase financing, so access is equitable for the poorest populations. And we document and share lessons learned to accelerate the replication of best practice efforts at a global level. CHAI is building on initial work that has already started in several countries, where we are doing targeted screenings and dispense reading glasses via different channels.
Position Overview
This role is an exceptional opportunity for someone who wants to make a difference in global health outcomes by driving the global scaling of one of the most cost-effective interventions in development. As Associate Director, you will shape programs to transform the lives of millions of people around the world. You will: 1) drive the implementation of CHAI’s global eyeglasses access strategy; 2) work with CHAI country teams to develop, implement and evaluate cost-effective programs; and 3) work with partners and global stakeholders to mobilize resources and increase awareness that will drive change at a global scale. This space is rapidly evolving, so you will need to maintain visibility on the latest evidence to inform our strategy and contribute to the work of other partners. This work will require you to build effective working relationships, both with external partners and CHAI colleagues.
This role is part of the CHAI’s Global Assistive Technology team and reports to the Senior Director. You are expected to work independently and flexibly and have a deep personal commitment to producing the highest quality results. We are seeking a highly motivated individual with exceptional project management skills, business acumen, and outstanding communication skills. CHAI places great value on relevant personal qualities: resourcefulness, entrepreneurialism, tenacity, independence, humility, and work ethic. Limited travel up to 20% is expected.
The title and level of responsibility for this role may be elevated to ‘Director’ for candidates who demonstrate a higher level of experience and qualifications.
This position is flexible to be based in other CHAI Program Countries subject to country leadership approval and the availability of work authorization.
Responsibilities
The Associate Director will play a pivotal role in solving one of the world’s largest gaps in global development. CHAI and its partners are highly ambitious to scale fast. Key responsibilities include:
Drive the implementation of CHAI’s global eyeglasses access strategy. This includes identifying, incubating, scaling and evaluating high-impact and cost-effective interventions for increasing access to eyeglasses in different settings around the world.Lead work with partners to ensure that our work will accelerate change at a global scale. This includes partnering and contributing to the work of global stakeholders like the World Health Organization, EYElliance, donors, professional associations, and academic institutions. For example, lead CHAI’s engagement with strategic partners, like the SPECS 2030 initiative.Develop and maintain comprehensive evidence on best-practice interventions to inform future work.Lead the evaluation of program interventions. For example, support the testing and evaluation of what delivery channels are most cost-effective for delivering eyeglasses to different target populations in various settings, and rigorously analyze progress to maximize the impact of every dollar invested.Support CHAI country teams to shape and implement existing and new eyeglasses programs. This includes:Facilitating knowledge sharing across CHAI program countries.Where useful and relevant, liaising with technical experts and supporting donor reports.Leading the development of global knowledge sharing products, this includes publications and external communications.Lead fundraising efforts to accelerate eyeglasses programs worldwide. This includes donor outreach and supporting the development of concepts notes and proposals.Lead internal and external communications, including knowledge products and sector engagements.Other responsibilities as needed by supervisor.Qualifications

Experiences
