The Unit for Undergraduate Medical Education (UUME) in the School of Clinical Medicine in the Faculty of Health Sciences invites applications from suitably qualified clinicians, who have a true passion for medical education for appointment to a part time academic development and student support post.
This is a part-time, 60%, post (5 hours per day / 25 hours per week / 3 full days per week (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday))
Main purpose of the job The main purpose of this position is to actively support the academic development of our Simulation and Case Application Sessions (CAS) and materials and 2) to provide some academic support to students who are struggling in the Graduate Entry Medical Programme (GEMP) at Wits Medical School GEMP during their GEMP 1-2 years, under the guidance of the Simulation and Case Application Session Coordinator.
Additional duties are specified in the Key performance areas section below. The post is aimed at developing the skills, knowledge and experience of young South African clinicians who have a keen interest in undergraduate medical education. The post is part time to specifically enable the post holder to still be clinically/research active on their off days (usually Mondays & Fridays) (to do locums, etc.) or do something else (like research, etc).

Key performance areas
Engagement with other academic and admin colleagues to support and contribute to the development, administration and delivery of the Simulation and Case Application Sessions (CAS) in the GEMP 1-2 course. Guidance and support will be provided. Time allocation would be approximately 80% on Case Application sessions and 20% on Simulation sessions. Training and support will be provided
Engage actively in the provision of academic support to GEMP students who need it, within the bounds of the post holder s skills and knowledge base. Guidance and support will be provided.
Participation in assessment processes of UUME such as MCQ and OSCEs assessments, including setting and marking of these. Training and support will be provided.
Support UUME s various academic processes in terms of teaching/learning and assessment as directed by the Director of UUME.
Act as mentor and role model to the GEMP students
Assistance with faculty staff development through workshops to train staff and simulated patients.
Minimum requirements to apply for this position:
A clinical degree in health sciences in either Medicine, Dentistry or BCMP from an accredited University
Registered, and in good standing, with the HPCSA
A South African citizen or Permanent resident of the RSA.
Evidence of a passion for, and experience in medical education
Abilities, qualifications or experience that would be an advantage in your application
Experience in teaching undergraduate medical students
Any postgraduate qualifications in medical/health professions education e.g. Postgraduate Diploma or Masters in Health Science Education
An ability to speak two or more (includes English) of the eleven official South African languages
Desirable personal abilities of the successful applicant
Passionate and enthusiastic educator who is keen to explore and develop new ideas in education.
Positive work attitude and keen to engage with students
Good administrative skills with working knowledge of Microsoft Office
Self-motivated, able to work independently and work as part of the UUME team
Able to work under pressure and adhere to deadlines
Good interpersonal skills, tactful, respectful, non-judgmental and punctual
