**Job Description**
The Associate Director, University Advising (UA) provides leadership and management in support of the mission and vision of the University Advising department, serving as a leader of centralized University Advising functions so that other personnel can focus on student and staffing needs within their respective advising centers. The position reports to the Director of University Advising, and plays an essential leadership role, including:
+ serving as a key partner for the department director on management and leadership of the work team and department operations, actively supporting and facilitating short and long-term planning and implementation;
+ managing the coordination and delivery of onboarding and professional development for new and current professional academic advisors and graduate assistants for the University Advising department;
+ overseeing academic advising training and professional development for a campus constituents, including campus partners and faculty advisors;
+ utilizing their advanced training, knowledge and experience with academic advising to support the evolution of tools and technology that support student degree progress and completion;
+ nimbly and competently serving as a professional advisor during extended staffing transitions.
The Associate Director necessarily has a broad understanding of advising structures and resources in general, and MSU curriculum, policies and practices specifically, serving the department as a whole. The position holds responsibility for departmental management, general operations, staff oversight and support and decision-making in the Director’s absence. The position is an active member of the university’s advising leadership team, and actively consults and collaborates with Student Advising Directors, Assistant Directors in the University Advising Center, and other campus partners focusing on student success. By serving both as an advisor and administrator, the Associate Director maintains a pulse on the current student experience, while engaging facilitation and organizational skills needed to elevate academic advising.
**Minimum Qualifications**
+ Master's degree (conferred by the time of hire) and three (3) years of academic advising and/or student support experience in higher education,
OR
+ Bachelor's degree and five (5) years of experience in higher education in academic advising and/or student support areas.
+ Demonstrated commitment to students with diverse backgrounds including, but not limited to, students of color, LGBTQ+ students, first generation students, students with disabilities, and/or international students.
**Preferred Qualification**

**Administrative Operations & Leadership (30%)**
+ Serves as a key partner for department director on management and leadership of our work team, department operations.
+ Supports and facilitates short and long-term planning and implementation for the department as a whole, including resource management, and assessment of advising services.
+ Creates, implements and assesses goals and objectives for areas of responsibility consistent with department, division, and University planning.
+ Utilizes academic advising expertise to provide informed consultation with advising centers and support across campus.
+ Identifies areas of improvement in University Advising processes, structures, and staffing to further evolve areas of responsibility and improve the student experience.
+ Investigates and determines appropriate follow-up for particularly sensitive student situations that include work with Title IX, the Violence Awareness Response Program, Financial Aid and Registration & Academic Records.
+ Leads departmental investigations into perceived advising errors by professional academic advisors across the department, including determining and recommending resolution and remedies to appropriate personnel (including upper-administrators).
+ Provides follow-up for escalated situations involving University Advising that have surfaced in areas outside of the department.
+ Serves as UA liaison to campus partners responsible for implementation of technology that supports student degree progression and completion.
+ In the Director’s absence, the Associate Director holds responsibility for department management, general operations, staff oversight and support, and decision-making. The Associate Director serves as the Director’s designee, representing the University Advising department, at divisional and university meetings.
**Onboarding & Professional Development within University Advising** **(25%)**
Leads University Advising through use of their advanced understanding of academic advising processes and structures, as well as technological and degree completion resources to develop, implement, evaluate and continuously improve coordinated approaches to onboard and train professional academic advisors and graduate assistants/interns within and adjacent to the department. This responsibility includes creation of relevant learning outcomes, development of curriculum, inclusion of appropriate subject-matter-experts, and identification of areas that need further development. The Associate Director plays a critically important role that impacts our abilities to equip incoming professional academic advisors with the skills, knowledge, and experience to accurately and compassionately support divisional goals around student success, and individual students in the obtainment of their goals.
**Professional Development & Training for Faculty Advisors & Campus Partners (20%)**
Use extensive understanding of academic advising’s role in student development and support, as well as the particulars of MSU’s advising structure and related resources, to develop and implement professional development and training opportunities for the campus-at-large (i.e. Advising Forum meetings, NACADA webinars, etc.). Serve as University Advising lead on the Student Success Advising Academy team, charged with setting priorities, developing, implementing, evaluating, and regularly improving/enhancing professional development and training opportunities targeting faculty advisors and other campus partners. To facilitate participation and growth of the Academy, the Associate Director works with university leadership charged with enhancing faculty professional development opportunities, to ensure that faculty have opportunities to grow their knowledge and skills on topics and resources available to support student success and completion. Through these functions, the Associate Director directly impacts university-wide student success efforts, in support of division and university student retention and completion goals.
**Advising At-Large** **(15%)**
During extended staff transitions and/or peak advising/registration periods, the Associate Director serves as a professional advisor supporting students on an at-large basis, for example when a vacancy among advisors occurs, and/or an extended leave is being taken. At-large advising requires the Associate Director to have a firm understanding of university-wide academic policies and procedures, while also actively learning curricular requirements and program policies and procedures across the entire campus. Additionally, the Associate Director uses their extensive knowledge of programs and processes to play a critical leadership role in the university’s response to returning students (students who have stopped out for 1+ years), helping them discern the most applicable academic program and resources, given their individual goals and progress. The Associate Director accomplishes all of this work by establishing meaningful connections, demonstrating care, coordinating support, and removing individual barriers to student success. The Associate Director engages in proactive strategies for student retention and progression including, but not limited to, early and mid-term alerts, academic recovery, university reinstatement, re-enrollment efforts, strategic outreach and redirection with students not making progress toward their degrees.
**Other duties as assigned** **(10%)**
The Associate Director represents University Advising during meetings, and/or group membership, of various campus and/or system partners, and stakeholders. Additional responsibilities may be assigned as this position evolves.
