Position Information Posting NumberSRGV8070 Working TitleASSOCIATE DEAN FOR ACADEMIC AFFAIRS - SCHOOL OF OPTOMETRY Number of Vacancies1 LocationEdinburg, Texas DepartmentSchool of Optometry FTE1.0 FLSAExempt Scope of Job The Associate Dean for Academic Affairs ( ADAA ) at UT Rio Grande Valley ( UTRGV ) School of Optometry has an essential role in the school and is responsible for overseeing all academic, curricular functions. This position is integral to the establishment and management of the optometry program. This individual will help establish a curriculum designed to focus on problem-based aptitudes of the students within the program. The ADAA will develop and monitor curricular courses, assessment processes, faculty and student scheduling, and academic/professional standards of the school, ensuring alignment with the institution’s policies. The ADAA will work closely with the Dean in developing the mission, goals and objectives of the school. In addition, they will work with the executive team of the UTRGV School of Optometry in developing policies and procedures for the school. Description of Duties + Oversee all academic functions at UTRGV School of Optometry. + Design, develop, manage, and provide oversight of the curriculum, faculty and student schedules. + Provide course content guidance and validation. + Develop academic policies and procedures to include academic standards, professional standards, successful academic progress, and remediation. + Implement and execute the academic and clinical program. + Assume the responsibilities of the Dean in the absence of the Dean. + Aid in recruitment, retention and development of faculty members. + Deliver administrative guidance to faculty committees. + Prepare data regarding the school’s academic program to accreditation agencies and the Association for Schools and Colleges of Optometry. + Serve as liaison to various local, state, and national optometry organizations. + Work closely with Strategic Enrollment and Student Affairs in student recruitment, admission, and management. + Help with the integration of the didactic and clinical programs. + Provide oversight of school budgetary requests and daily budget review. + The Associate Dean of Academic Affairs will be assigned classroom teaching duties and/or clinical services duties on a regular basis as directed by the Dean of the School of Optometry. + Perform other duties as assigned. Supervision Received General supervision from assigned supervisor. Supervision Given Direct supervision of assigned staff. Required Education Doctor of Optometry degree (O.D.) from an ACOE -accredited institution or a clinical equivalent. Preferred Education N/A Licenses/Certifications Eligible for optometric licensure in the State of Texas Required Experience + Three (3) years demonstrated health professional school and / or academic leadership work experience in higher education, with a strong preference for academic leadership experience + Advanced academic degree or optometry residency/fellowship trained Solid understanding of the profession of Optometry and its role in the local, regional and national healthcare environment + Comprehensive administrative skills including attention to detail, communication, supervision, and fiscal responsibility + Experience in interprofessional healthcare education + Expertise in higher education teaching and background in evolving pedagogical approaches to learning Preferred Experience Academic leadership experience in a school of optometry. Equipment Use of standard office equipment. Working Conditions Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Work is performed primarily in a general office environment. Some travel and weekend work is required. UTRGV is a distributed institution, which may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley.
