This position is OHSU's public face in the K-16 STEM education community and is responsible for OHSU's Office of Science Education Opportunities (SEO). Leading K-16 health science education for all Oregonians, SEO provides the point of entry to OHSU for education outreach individuals, groups and partners. The individual in this role leads OHSU's efforts in developing coherent state level support and mechanisms for health science preparation and guides/directs OHSU's policy leadership in STEM preparation. This position offers opportunities for students and teachers throughout the state and promotes partnerships, integration, and collaboration across the campus and in the community as it nurtures, integrates and implements mission-driven initiatives in science education outreach. SEO also facilitates the dissemination of health information from OHSU to the K-12 community.

Function/Duties of Position Direct the growth and development of OHSU’s statewide K-16 education outreach initiatives. Act as a catalyst for the design and delivery of innovative and effective programming, ensuring implementation of a comprehensive and flexible education outreach plan fully aligned with OHSU’s strategic plan.Represent OHSU at state and national STEM education and workforce events/platforms; recommend related policy and program actions to OHSU leadership; oversee the development, implementation, monitoring and communication of resulting initiatives.Develop and deepen high level partnerships with relevant groups and external leaders including K-12 schools (at the individual and district levels), higher education partners, education consortia, industry leaders, program providers and government agencies to deliver OHSU’s educational mission. Represent OHSU externally at STEM Investment Council, Portland Workforce Alliance, Saturday Academy, OMSI, OR Science Teachers Association, Portland Metro STEM Partnership and other Oregon STEM Hubs. Internally, serve on OHSU Provost’s Operations team as requested, chair OHSU Advisory Committees as requested, and chair OHSU Science Outreach and Resources committee.Build statewide strategy by assessing existing offerings and leveraging effective mechanisms and networks including: Career and Technical Education programs of study, AHEC K-12 programs, OR STEM, Portland Public Schools Office of Strategic Partnerships, OHSU’s Rural Campus development, and others. Explore systematic mechanisms and best practices to further build statewide infrastructure supporting Oregon’s health science education pathways. Provide ongoing needs assessment to identify gaps in education outreach offerings and overlap in services. Work with internal and external thought leaders to determine critical audiences and program areas in need of growth.Help meet Oregon’s workforce needs in the health and science professions through innovative strategies and sustainable outreach activities that have a long history of high quality (i.e. Discover Careers, OHSU Teacher Advisory Committee, NW Youth Careers Expo, Brain Awareness Teacher Workshops, OR AHEC’s Medquest) as well as new programs that develop in response to opportunities and needs voiced by the community (i.e. Science and Engineering Festival, Body Worlds, TriMet’s Tilikum Crossing opening & Human Genome exhibit, etc.).Supervise and partner with director of On Track OHSU! to increase interest in and access to the health sciences for learners in historically marginalized communities. Further the strategic positioning and visibility of On Track with OHSU leadership, assist with stewardship of community and philanthropic partnerships, support annual budget process, and forge new partnerships to support program expansion. Work with OHSU Foundation and RAPP to secure external funding from state and federal agencies, philanthropic entities and industry to sustain and grow program.Serve as a clearinghouse for OHSU’s science education resources and facilitate the dissemination of health information from OHSU to the K-12 community.Develop cross-functional relationships with departments throughout OHSU. Manage wide range of faculty, staff and student participants in university outreach activities. Plan events in collaboration with other entities and OHSU
departments, schools and institutes to address public health needs.Work with OHSU Admissions colleagues in all schools/programs to support recruitment and to learn about applicant participation in OHSU’s pathways programs. Gather data on OHSU summer internships, support internship coordinators through regular communication/Teams group, host annual Summer Welcome events for Summer Interns, host West Campus summer interns on Marquam Hill.Develop and manage budget for education outreach programs (Pierce Funds, OCF).Provide faculty and departments technical assistance with broader impact activities utilizing knowledge of and sensitivity to internal mechanisms and teams (i.e. Risk Management, Environmental Health and Safety, OVV, etc.). Preferred Qualifications Terminal degree in Education, public health, social work, STEM, or other relevant field.Highly creative, innovative, resourceful, and flexible.
