The University of Rhode Island seeks a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Psychology. The area of affiliation (Behavioral Science or Clinical Psychology) and research specialization is open, although preference will be given to applicants whose research programs include a focus on health disparities, qualitative (mixed) methods, and program evaluation. The candidate’s research should complement existing departmental strengths in behavior change and health psychology, substance use, trauma, child anxiety, and resilience in mental health. We seek a scholar dedicated to innovative research and teaching, with a commitment to excellence in mentoring and to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in all aspects of their work. Appointment Start Date: Fall 2025.

About Department:
The Department of Psychology houses among the largest undergraduate and graduate programs at the University, with over 1000 undergraduates and 60 graduate students. We offer both BA and BS Undergraduate degrees, doctoral tracks in Behavioral Science and an APA-accredited Clinical Psychology program, and a new masters-level program in Mental and Behavioral Health Counseling. Clinical training is supported by our Psychological Consultation Center (PCC) that serves both the university and the larger Rhode Island community.


Duties and Responsibilities:

● Conduct original research in their relevant area of expertise in psychology.

● Teach two courses per semester at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

● Mentor graduate and undergraduate students, fostering academic and professional growth.

● Contribute to the department’s mission of promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion through research, teaching, and service.

● Engage in service activities within the department, college, and broader university community.


Qualifications

Required:

1. Ph.D. in Psychology or a related field by the time of appointment.

2. Demonstrated expertise in qualitative and/or mixed methods research.

3. A strong research agenda with potential for external funding.

4. Demonstrated ability in teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

5. Integration of diversity, equity, and inclusion in research, teaching, and service.

6. Ability to contribute to one or more of the department’s existing strengths in behavior change, substance use, trauma, child anxiety, and resilience in mental health.

7. Demonstrated excellence in oral communication skills.

8. Demonstrated excellence in written communication skills.

9. Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills.

Preferred:

1. Experience teaching qualitative, mixed methods, and/or program evaluation at the graduate level.

2. A record of mentoring and supporting students from diverse backgrounds.

3. Experience or interest in interdisciplinary collaboration and community-based research.
