Assistant Professor
University of Virginia
The Department of Family Medicine (FM) at the University of Virginia School of Medicine seeks applicants for a tenure-eligible faculty position of Assistant Professor on the Academic Investigator track. The successful candidate will be appointed within FM as part of the departmental strategic plan to expand research on colorectal cancer etiology, cancer prevention, and population health. The incumbent will also join UVA Comprehensive Cancer Center as a member of the Cancer Prevention and Population Health (CPH) program.
The Department of Family Medicine, led by Li Li, MD, PhD, MPH, currently operates seven practices that provide a strong base for clinical education and research. Our providers lead clinically differentiated programs in adult gender medicine, obesity medicine, refugee care, sports medicine, and obstetrics. These practices allow FM to serve a wide array of patients of all life stages across diverse cultural and socio-economic populations.
The Department also has an established FM residency program and a Sports Medicine fellowship program. UVA Health is an integrated health system with a world-class academic medical center that includes the first NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center in Virginia.

The Department is known internationally for work in evidence-based medicine, sudden infant death syndrome and other sudden unexpected infant death, cancer prevention and disparities, and the molecular and genetic epidemiology of colorectal cancer. The Department is highly ranked for NIH funding among all Departments of Family Medicine nation-wide. Research infrastructure support includes statistical and quantitative, qualitative and mixed-methods expertise.
The Department is seeking candidates who are highly collaborative and aspire to develop an independent line of research on colon carcinogenesis and prevention. In particular, the successful candidate is encouraged to collaborate with Dr. Li Li’s research program on colorectal cancer molecular/genomic epidemiology and disparities, and leverage an established large biobank with samples from patients undergoing colonoscopy examinations for screening and surveillance to study various aspects of colorectal cancer etiology. This position will also be encouraged to collaborate with investigators across UVA Grounds on other areas of research such as health disparities, cancer environmental epidemiology, and community-based participatory research.
The position is open to individuals with a Ph.D. or other terminal doctorate-level degree that are eligible for appointment to the University of Virginia faculty. Candidates with education in cancer epidemiology, population health, cancer biology, bioinformatics, preventive medicine, or similar areas are encouraged to apply.
