Job Description

The Jacksonville Public Library is actively seeking an Assistant Library Supervisor.

This is managerial work at the working supervisor level which includes assisting the branch or department manager with planning, organizing, and directing the functions, programs, and staff of a library branch or department within the Main Library. In the absence of the branch/department manager, assumes responsibility for the branch or department. Work requires an understanding and application of management theories, principles, and practices of professional library work gained through degree granting schools or an equivalent level of practical knowledge gained through experience. S upports the overall mission of the Library by providing customer service in a manner that creates a positive customer experience. Assists with managing the day-to-day operations of an assigned unit through planning, organizing, scheduling, assigning, monitoring, reviewing, and evaluating the work of assigned staff. Work involves frequent contact with library customers, volunteers, and others requiring skills in understanding people, sensitivity to varying points of view, and persuasiveness necessary to influence behavior, change of opinion, or resolve a situation. Work is covered by clearly defined library policies and Library Science principles and the employee is required to exercise judgment in determining how to accomplish objectives. Work requires the use of judgment in searching for solutions or new applications within one’s known experiences. Work is performed in an office, library, or community environment to promote library services. Due to the nature of library operations, the employee may be required to work evenings and on weekends, and at various branch locations. Physical demands consist of sitting or standing at a workstation for extended periods of time and using standard office or library equipment on an ongoing basis. May be required to lift objects weighing up to 25 pounds and push loaded book trucks weighing up to 50 pounds. Maintains appearance standards by reporting facilities issues and picking up litter on library grounds. Work is performed under limited supervision where the work assignments are subject to established procedures, practices, techniques and/or policies, and the employee plans and organizes the work, determines their own priorities. Work is reviewed in terms of quality, volume, timeliness and for adherence to established methods, standards, and polices.
