Assistant Director of Sustainability and Communications
Location: Albany, NY Category: Promotional Posted On: Wed Mar 12 2025 Job Description: The Assistant Director for Sustainability Engagement and Communications is responsible for managing campus engagement and communications related to sustainability initiatives and policies, including coordinating programs, supervising student interns, and providing administrative support for the Office of Sustainability. This position assists in implementing the Campus Sustainability Plan, aligning efforts with the University Strategic Plan, and representing the office at internal and external organizations to promote sustainability goals and initiatives. Essential Functions: Sustainability Programming, Engagement, and Initiatives + Assume responsibility for the management and administration of student and staff engagement on sustainability initiatives. + Oversee the operation of the heritage garden, office composting program, move-out program, free Friday office supply swap, and free market clothing exchanges, and assist in waste audits and infrastructure management. + Interface with campus community members and offices on establishing new initiatives related to operations or engagement activities + Develop, monitor, and maintain any new initiatives related to sustainability. Communications + Maintain and monitor office communications, including the sustainability website, Go Green email, social media accounts, and other communication outlets. + Oversee the creation and distribution of educational materials, related to sustainable behaviors Manage Workforce + Provide leadership, oversight and direction to student workers, interns and volunteers to assure goals, programs, activities, and personnel practices are consistent with and contribute to the University's goals and strategies. Administrative Tasks + Manage administrative operations for the Office of Sustainability, including budget oversight, documentation processing, and coordination of schedules, supplies, and deliveries. Professional Development + Represent the office at campus wide events and internal committees. + Participate in professional organizations related to sustainability. + Assist in data collection and analysis of the campus Sustainability Plan, AASHE STARS, and other reporting required via NYS Executive Orders and/or voluntary reporting platforms. + Other reasonable duties as assigned. Functional and Supervisory Relationships: + Reports to Director of Sustainability + Supervises the following positions (all student positions): Graduate Assistant, Eco-Rep Coordinator, Student interns Job Requirements: + Ability to independently administer high-quality sustainability programs. + Exceptional organization and project management skills, with the ability to collaborate with across a diverse campus + Strong communication skills, with the ability to clearly and effectively convey information both orally and in writing, including through social media; comfortable in group meetings and skilled in delivering presentations. + Ability to effectively manage and guide a diverse group of student staff and volunteers. + Knowledge of sustainability principles, programs, and practices. Working Environment: + High energy, high paced office + May include night and weekend hours + Movement of materials and supplies/garden work Job Requirements: Required Qualifications: + Bachelor's degree from a college or University accredited by the US Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization. + 1 to 3 years of experience in sustainability program management or a related field + Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite + Applicants must demonstrate an ability to develop inclusive and equitable relationships within our diverse campus community + Applicants must demonstrate an ability to support diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and belonging relative to their role Preferred Qualifications: + Master's degree from a college or University accredited by the US Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization. + Experience supervising or mentoring student workers, interns, or volunteers + Experience in higher education + Experience in managing social media accounts and creating content Additional Information: This is a promotional opportunity for current UAlbany employees.
