SUMMARY OF POSITION

Reporting to the Sr. Director of Development for the University of Maryland School of Medicine Program in Oncology and University of Maryland Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center (UMGCCC), the Assistant Director of Development will carry out fundraising and outreach efforts for the University of Maryland Medicine Program in Oncology and the University of Maryland Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center. The successful candidate will work with physicians and staff on the discovery, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of highly rated donors who give annually through mailed appeals, but who are not quite ready to make a major gift. They will also work with unaffiliated donors identified and engaged through community events and our Board of Visitors. The individual focuses on annual gift donors and cultivates them to make major gifts up to $25,000. This person also identifies prospects with the capacity to make seven-figure gifts to support the major gift officer’s prospect pipeline. This professional is a critical member of the University of Maryland Medicine Philanthropy team and works to secure contributions from grateful patients, friends, and others.

Led by internationally renowned thoracic oncologist, Taofeek K. Owonikoko, UMGCCC offers innovative approaches to diagnosing and treating all types of cancer, conduct cutting-edge research to bring the latest advances in cancer treatment directly to our patients, and provide cancer screening and patient education services. As part of the University of Maryland Medical System, the UMGCCC is at the forefront of successful efforts which are driving down the impact of cancer in Maryland. With 53% of patients in clinical trials representing minorities, prior experience and expertise in health disparities would be an advantage.

The candidate:

Recommends, oversees, and implements strategies for cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of a portfolio of annual lead gift prospects and donors in support of annual priorities and on-going philanthropic goals.
Manages a portfolio of 100 to 150 prospects, in the range of $5,000 or more.
Cultivates annual lead gift donors.
Identifies planned giving prospects for the major gift team.
Works with major gift team to provide major gift prospects of $25,000 or higher for our prospect pipeline.
Develops cultivation and solicitation strategies and closes lead annual gifts.
Contributes individually and in cooperation with others to achieve unit goals.
Assists in the preparation of lead annual gift proposals for individual prospects. Responsible for documentation of referrals and contact reports.
Solicits gifts directly and prepares and briefs faculty members and/or development colleagues.
Manages Leadership Gift Fundraising for University of Maryland Medicine Oncology along with other Leadership and Major Gift Projects as assigned.
Travels locally and interacts regularly with prospects and faculty members.
Tracks the success of prospect strategies and suggests changes, as necessary.
Meets with faculty to develop case for private support as needed.Performs other related duties as assigned by the Assistant Dean for Development.

Education: Bachelor’s degree, preferably in a related field.

Experience: Three (3) years of philanthropy, sales, marketing, communications, and/or other outreach/relationship-building skills through professional or volunteer work, education, or internships.

Preferred: Previous work in academic medicine preferred.

Credit history review may be required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

An ability to work with staff and senior administration to develop major gift donor opportunities.
An ability to establish strong collaborative ties with senior administration and utilize senior administration in achieving fundraising objectives.
Knowledge of best practices.
An ability to establish personal goals and processes necessary for achieving major gift goals.
Strategic and analytical thinking skills coupled with the ability to solve problems and make decisions.
An ability to prioritize ongoing and new projects, as well as conduct research and gather information.
Outstanding oral/written communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
Flexibility in the performance of other duties as required or assigned by the Assistant Dean for Development.

Hiring Range: $78,000 - $85,000, commensurate with education and experience. Targeted salary: $80,000
