We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Assistant Controller to join our growing finance team. The ideal candidate will have a strong accounting background, excellent analytical skills, and a passion for process improvement. This position will play a critical role in supporting the Controller with financial reporting, regulatory compliance, process improvements, and leading the day-to-day operations of the accounting department.
Key Responsibilities:Financial Reporting:Oversee the preparation and timely delivery of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP.Assist with the preparation and review of consolidated financial reports.Monitor and analyze financial performance and variances against budget, reporting findings to the Controller and senior management.Month-End and Year-End Close:Lead the month-end close process, including reconciliations, journal entries, and balance sheet reviews.Coordinate the year-end close process and liaise with external auditors to ensure timely and accurate financial audits.General Accounting and Operations:Supervise the accounting team, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll.Ensure all transactions are recorded accurately and in compliance with company policies and regulatory requirements.Assist in developing and implementing accounting policies, procedures, and systems to improve efficiency and accuracy.Internal Controls & Compliance:Maintain and enhance the company’s internal control framework to mitigate risks and ensure compliance with accounting standards.Oversee compliance with local, state, and federal tax filings and regulations.Process Improvement:Identify opportunities to improve financial processes and systems for greater efficiency, accuracy, and control.Lead or assist with ERP system enhancements and the implementation of financial tools.Leadership and Development:Mentor and develop junior accounting staff, providing guidance on accounting principles and career development.Assist the Controller with special projects and ad hoc financial analysis as needed.Qualifications:Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required; CPA or MBA preferred.5+ years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or leadership role.Strong understanding of GAAP and general accounting principles.Experience with financial reporting, budgeting, and forecasting.Proficiency in ERP systems and advanced Microsoft Excel skills.Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.Strong communication and interpersonal skills; ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.Preferred Skills:Familiarity with tax compliance and regulatory requirements.Strong project management skills and ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.

Pet Food Express determines starting salary based on many factors, including but not limited to, local market rate, the qualified pool of candidates, internal compensation practices, a candidate’s actual skills and experience.
