Assistant Controller

Reporting to the Regional Controller, the Assistant Controller will be responsible for oversight of the Finance function and team including executing the accounting and financial plan in accordance with Corporate Policy. This position will provide support to the SWO region, including joint ventures as well as National Service functions.

Regional Responsibilities

General ledger journal responsibilities, including Month End and Year End activitiesReview coding on invoices and expense reports for accuracyPrepare financial reporting for OperationsPrepare weekly Service Division Manager report, including Safety & Training StatisticsAssist with updating annual and quarterly budget and forecast templatesOversee tax and government remittancesOversee monthly account reconciliations and bank reconciliationsAssist with general ledger accountability, overhead and recoveries monitoring, expense review and cost control, month end procedures and audit preparedness, including WSIB remittances & auditsAssist Regional Controller with fleet management and accounts receivables dutiesPerform monthly variance analysis (i.e. actual vs. budget)Work jointly with administrators & coordinators to ensure work orders and purchase orders are current and processed as per company policiesProcess bi-weekly Salary Payroll for Region, including T4 and T2200 DistributionResponsible for banking activities, including processing EFT’s and Banking filesCollaborate with Division Managers with financial operationsAssist Controller and Division Managers with ad hoc requestsSupervise, support and mentor AdministratorsOther duties as assigned

Joint Venture Responsibilities

Responsible for month-end accounting procedures including the preparation of the first draft of financial statements for Regional Controller reviewResponsible for overseeing all Financial areas of Joint Venture, including billing, accounts payable and accounts receivables duties Perform monthly variance analysis (i.e. actual vs. budget)Prepare and maintain reconciliation files and working papers to support the annual review engagement by external auditors and US Partners Competency Requirements Change OrientationCommunicates EffectivelyContinuous LearningCustomer FocusHolds Self and Others AccountableProblem Solving and InnovationTeamwork and CollaborationValues and Respects Others Education & Skill Requirements Completion of an appropriate degree program (Accounting, Finance) from a recognized University and working towards accounting designationPreference will be given to those with an Accounting Designation3-5 years’ experience in a similar roleStrong analytical skillsStrong understanding of full cycle accountingSelf-starter with the ability to manage multiple projects, meet deadlines, and work well under pressureStrong and effective written and verbal communication skillsProven interpersonal, organizational, and problem solving skillsStrong technical skills in Excel and WordAbility to work independently and with minimal directionExperience with ERP systems (JD Edwards experience would be an asset)Experience in the construction industry would be an asset
