Join a team that has the environment down to a science. **Your Opportunity** Stantec is a leading global provider of professional consulting services in the fields of environmental sciences, engineering, and archaeology. We are currently seeking experienced Archaeology Technicians to join our dynamic team on a project basis for projects in Kansas, Missouri, Iowa, and Nebraska. As an Archaeology Technician, you will play a crucial role in supporting our field programs by assisting with field data collection and analysis. This position offers the opportunity for fieldwork on a variety of projects, including renewable solar and wind, residential developments, wetland restorations, pipelines, transmission lines, transportation projects, and excavation and investigations of cemeteries. This hourly, on-call position will support the archaeological fieldwork needs of the Upper Midwest region. This position requires the ability to work outdoors in urban and remote locations and for extended periods under all weather conditions, often traversing rugged terrain. Stantec is committed to workplace safety and maintaining safe work practices. Extensive travel may be required. The standard workweek is typically Monday through Friday, while overtime and weekend work may be required based on project demands and weather conditions. Projects typically run from March through November, with opportunities to travel for fieldwork during the winter months. Multi-week field assignments are common. While based in one of Stantec’s offices in Wichita, Kansas City, St. Louis, Des Moines, or Waterloo, Iowa projects typically will require travel via vehicle or plane for out-of-town field work. Candidates living across the Upper Midwest are encouraged to apply. **Your Key Responsibilities** + Working with field crews to conduct archaeological fieldwork. + Demonstrating skills and experience with field tasks such as precontact and historic artifact identification, as well as soil analysis and interpretation. + Working under the supervision of a field director or crew lead. + Perform a variety of field duties including, archaeological shovel test excavation, pedestrian survey, and monitoring. + Record and evaluate soils using color (Munsell), texture, and inclusions; Orienteering using a compass, USGS topographic maps, plan maps, GPS units, iPads, and aerial photography. + Occasional laboratory duties may be available on a project specific basis. + Operating and maintaining field equipment including GPS units, digital cameras, tablets, and hand tools. + Traveling extensively to project sites. + Prioritizing safety in field and laboratory practices. + Following established safety protocols for hazardous conditions including extreme weather, wildlife encounters, and excavation safety. + Participating in daily tailgate safety meetings and following site-specific safety plans. + Exercising stop-work authority when unsafe conditions are identified. **Qualifications** **Your Capabilities and Credentials** + Positive, safety-first attitude. + Effective communication skills and a collaborative mindset. + Organized and capable of executing work assignments with attention to detail. + Commitment to producing high quality in-field work products. + Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather conditions. + Conduct Phase I survey, Phase II testing, and Phase III data recovery + Perform laboratory duties including artifact processing, classification, and curation, as well as artifact photography, database management, mapping, and report layout. + Maintain the ability to travel between project sites and Stantec office. + Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record. + Ability to travel for fieldwork often for extended periods. **Education and Experience** + Pursuing or completed bachelor's or master’s degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, History, or related field. + Previous experience in a field school or CRM setting as an archaeologist, surveyor, or similar role. + Technical expertise or specialty within Archaeology/Anthropology is advantageous. + Familiarity with recording field data using ESRI’s Field Maps is highly desirable. + Working knowledge of Plains and/or Midwest archaeology and field methods is preferred. This position is primarily fieldwork, but some office work may occur. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather, remote locations, summer heat, winter cold, and rough terrain; as well as bending, stooping, carrying field equipment, standing, and walking for extended periods of time, and making visual and tactile distinctions using color, texture, moisture content, depth, and distance. Ability to walk 4-10 miles per day over rough terrain and lift up to 50 lbs. When conducting non-local fieldwork, paid travel time, per diem, and single occupancy hotel rooms are provided. Stantec fleet or rental cars are often provided.
