POSITION DUTIES + Assists supervisor in the operations of the Bureau of Animal Care & Control in the Department of Public Safety, and functions as such when necessary. + Supervises assigned personnel; evaluates work; recommends and implements approved disciplinary and/or corrective action; provides training and/or technical assistance as requested or required, in the office or field. + Inspects personnel, uniforms, officer equipment and work trucks and truck equipment; schedules vehicle maintenance and repair. + Issues and discusses animal control citations with residents. + Receives and responds to inquiries and complaints from citizens involving animals throughout the city. + Schedules court hearings on animal control violations. + Requests criminal filings and appears in court when required. + Reviews and investigates complex cases involving enforcement of animal control regulations which are likely to require knowledge of court decisions or intent of the law. + Conducts educational programs for various public groups regarding proper animal care and control. + Serves as liaison between City and animal care agencies (e.g., Humane Animal Rescue of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania State Game Commission, County Public Health Department, other local animal shelter officials, etc.). + Evaluates candidates for employment as Animal Care & Control Officers. + Maintains records (e.g., personnel, animal control, inventory, etc.) and prepares accurate reports. + Observes and enforces strict adherence to safety regulations and safe work practices, particularly in the handling of animals and the operation of patrol vehicles. + Reviews reports filed and citations prepared by Animal Care & Control Officers for completeness and accuracy; advises necessary corrections and refers reports to higher-level personnel. + Provides other Public Safety bureaus with training, education, and response involving animals. + Performs activities and functions of related lower-level personnel and other related task/duties as required.
