Job Description

2. The role  

 

As an EFL Teacher, you will play a vital role in helping students achieve personal and academic growth during their time at our language camp. Working with a culturally diverse group of students, you’ll engage in enriching interactions while helping them improve both their English language proficiency and social skills in a dynamic, immersive environment.  

 

Your responsibilities will include delivering engaging, communicative lessons that foster a safe, inclusive and enjoyable learning atmosphere. Additionally, you will be expected to manage teaching-related administrative tasks and actively contribute to the positive camp experience.  

  

3. Key responsibilities  

  

3.1 Teaching   

 

Ensure all language tuition is appropriate to a camp environment and in line with the ALPADIA curriculum.  

Have and demonstrate a sound knowledge and awareness of the use of English and the linguistic systems underlying it, providing appropriate models of both spoken and written English.  

Ensure the content of the lessons considers the course objectives, the learning needs and cultural backgrounds of the students.  

Ensure each lesson leads to relevant learning outcomes, which are made known to students, and which are achieved through a coherent sequence of activities.  

Show initiative to ensure the syllabus is adapted to meet the specific needs of our students, both at a class and individual level.   

Ensure that there is an appropriate variety of teaching techniques, activities, task types which motivate and appeal to different learner types.  

Ensure that there are opportunities for differentiation.  

Ensure that the ALPADIA teaching resources are exploited to support learning outcomes and maximise learning.  

Ensure students are engaged and a positive learning atmosphere is created.  

Ensure that students are praised appropriately and encouraged to experiment with the language.   

Ensure that there are opportunities for production.   

Encourage the sole use of the target language in classrooms wherever possible, both from the students and the other teachers.  

Ensure students receive appropriate and timely feedback on their performance during the lesson.  

Ensure lessons include activities to evaluate whether learning is taking place.  

Ensure that the outside world is brought into the classroom with authentic resources and examples when appropriate.   

Ensure learning is promoted by the effective management of the classroom environment and resources.  

Always maintain proper levels of student discipline, safety and welfare, highlighting any issues to the Camp Manager or Academic Manager.  

Liaise with the Camp Manager and the Academic Manager to resolve any instances of issues, questions or concerns raised by students, agents, parents or other stakeholders.   

  

3.2 General   

  

Always represent ALPADIA in the best conceivable way, being polite and friendly to the students, both inside and outside of the classroom.  

Provide exceptional customer service to both internal and external customers at all times.  

Understand procedural documents and ALPADIA policies relevant to the role.  

Be familiar with all British Council inspection criteria relevant to the department.  

Actively participate in all staff meetings as necessary.  

Attend and where necessary contribute to, weekly Professional Development Sessions in a spirit of positive engagement.  

Be proactive about both your personal and professional development including attendance/completion of all compulsory training sessions and to actively participate in any training offered.  

Engage positively in a reflective teaching approach and developmental observation process, embracing an open-door classroom policy.  

Write lesson plans when requested by the Academic Manager for formal observations, inspections or professional development purposes.  

Arrive at the centre and ensure all lessons start and finish on time.  

Complete the attendance within 5 minutes of each lesson starting and report any absences according to camp procedures.  

Assist with placement testing as required.   

Read, understand and sign any relevant risk assessments as required.  

Undertake other duties as deemed necessary by line manager.  

 

4. Qualifications  

 

4.1 Essential   

bachelor’s degree with a minimum of three months of full-time equivalent ESL or foreign language classroom teaching experience; 

or  

bachelor’s degree, along with a certificate in teaching ESL or a foreign language that includes a practice teaching component. 

 

4.2 Desirable      

Degree in TESOL, Education, Applied Linguistics, Languages or related field  

CELTA, Trinity Cert. TESOL or equivalent  

DELTA, Dip. TESOL or equivalent  

 

5. Skills and Experience  

 

5.1 Essential  

Near-native proficiency in English 

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with a client focused approach  

High level of patience and approachability  

Ability to be flexible and adapt where required  

Excellent organizational skills   

Ability to work well in a team   

Ability to multitask and manage conflicting priorities  

Ability to plan the lessons efficiently while adapting to the demands of a fast-paced camp environment  

Excellent understanding of the unique strategies involved in teaching young learners  

Understanding of child protection and safeguarding policies  

Solid IT skills including MS Office  

 

5.2 Desirable  

Prior EFL teaching experience  

Experience of teaching in summer camps or similar contexts  

Experience of teaching young learners  

Experience with digital teaching tools and e-learning platforms  

Ability to find and present solutions to problems  

Ability to use initiative when required  

  

6. Timetable  

 

EFL Teachers teach 3 days a week – Monday, Wednesday and Friday with their core working hours aligned with their teaching schedule.  

 

On Mondays and Wednesdays, the core hours are from 08:15 AM to 17:15 PM, which include a daily staff meeting, breaks and eight (8x) 45-minute classes a day, as well as an additional 45-minute class if a teacher is scheduled to teach intensive or private (1-1) lessons.  

 

On Fridays, the core working hours are from 08:15 AM to 13:30 PM, which include a daily staff meeting, one break and four (4x) 45-minute classes each day, as well as an additional 45-minute class if a teacher is scheduled to teach intensive or private (1-1) lessons, with a possible CPD (Continuous Professional Development) Session between 12:30PM and 13:30PM. 

  

Teachers are not required on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Teachers are also not required to work on the weekends, except for scheduled induction days (usually the Saturday before the camp starts).  

   

7. Training  

  

We offer tailored TESOL training based on the teachers' previous experience and qualifications. This one-week long program focuses on ALPADIA curriculum, understanding the needs of ALPADIA students and EFL teaching strategies. Alongside this, teachers attend induction sessions to become familiar with the company policies and procedures as well as camp-specifics, such as classroom and IT setup ensuring a smooth transition into their roles. Additionally, during summer, in their core working hours teachers attend weekly CPD sessions, which provide opportunities to explore new teaching strategies and resources, collaborate with colleagues and further enhance their teaching skills.  

  

8. Pre-Employment Checks  

 

As our roles involve the pastoral care and safeguarding of junior students our employment offers are conditional upon satisfactory completion of the relevant nation’s statutory and regulatory pre-employment vetting procedures.
