The role
Camp Counselors are usually the first point of contact with our students from the time they get up to the time they go to bed. As such, the working week will offer you some wonderful experiences. The Activity Manager is responsible for delivering the whole of our activities programme, line managing Camp Counselors as necessary to prepare and lead activities in the afternoons and evenings and on their excursions away from the camp. Most important is the willingness and desire to be there for our students whenever they need you – to monitor their presence at all times. Your supervising of the students should always be conscientious as their safety is our top priority.
Key responsibilities
Safeguard and promote the wellbeing of students in our care
Ensure afternoon activities and/or Premium activities are properly prepared and delivered, giving particular thought to staging to ensure all students enjoy each activity.
Ensure Session Plans and risk assessments where necessary are prepared for all afternoon and evening activities.
Hold daily meetings with the activity team, delegating sessions to them as per their skills and interests
Ensure quality excursions are prepared and delivered, which inspire and motivate our students. Take a lead in ensuring the Excursion Pack is ready before each outing containing student lists, itineraries, risk assessments and tasks.
Create and display the student lists for excursions in good time
Assist in the management of student attendance for activities and excursions
Manage the student arrival activity sign-up process for weekly activity planning
Deliver the standard of quality that our students and stakeholders expect of Alpadia across the co-curricular programme
Be friendly and approachable to develop positive relationships with students that help to enhance their overall experience
Manage students’ behaviour at all times, with a judicious awareness of the need to sanction or encourage as appropriate
Prioritise the safety of students above all else, following our Safeguarding and Health and Safety regulations, ensuring other Camp Counselors do the same
Liase with and respond to the Customer Care Team about activity programme issues, incidents and enrolments
Assist with the training and induction of new staff members
Assist Camp Counselors with their preparation/delivery of activities and complete session observations to ensure they are of a high quality
Validate and confirm the reservations with excursions and Premium+ providers as well as coach companies. Adapt participant numbers compared to the initial reservation when needed
Validate and confirm the payment method with excursions providers
Ensure sufficient provision of public transport tickets where needed
Assist with the preparation and distribution of staff rotas for the Camp Counselor team
Supervise students’ free time actively and professionally, taking a lead in ensuring ALPADIA’s ratios are maintained at all times
Ensure rules in the residence are always followed and the accommodation is kept tidy
Ensure the students go to bed and wake up at the appropriate times, with staff cover provided as necessary
Assist in the check-in/check-out procedure if necessary
Ensure the proper supervision of students at mealtimes
Contribute to or lead the Reviews and Appraisals of other Camp Counselors
Contribute to daily staff meetings to feedback camp process improvements and pass on important information
Take a lead to control all booking and administrative requirements of the co-curricular part of the programme, updating our systems as appropriate
Support your management colleagues in their daily tasks to the benefit of the wider camp operation
Skills and Experience
4.1 Essential:
Able to lead, motivate and encourage large groups of teenagers
Ability to manage a large team of diverse personalities and skills
Ability to motivate, mentor and coach staff members
Experience working in holiday camps or similar organizations
Excellent communicator
Ability to work under pressure
High sense of responsibility, organization and initiative
A high degree of IT competency - Outlook & MS Office (specifically Excel)
Ability to quickly familiarize oneself with bespoke databases
Experience working with juniors
4. 2 Desirable:
Management experience in a summer school environment
Managing multiple departments and teams
Experience in a role involving organization/logistics/travel
Keen interest in culture and sport
First Aid qualification
Management degree
Safeguarding and Welfare experience with under 18s
Experience in similar role or Summer Camps
Timetable
Your Camp Manager will look to give you down time where possible (for example when the students are in English lessons), but you should anticipate a demanding workload in a fast moving, exciting environment. In addition, the Activity Manager is entitled to one day-off per week, to be decided along with the Camp Manager. Any specific requests should be made to the Camp Manager, who will do his/her best to help but these cannot be guaranteed. You will also be involved in deciding when Camp Counselors should have their day off. The Activity Manager’s role is residential.
